Quick Question....

I think some may be confusing 'core' with 'Franchise' type players. I see 'core' as being players you can build around. 'Franchise' players are those that the general public associate with a given team. I definitely think there is a difference, but that's up for debate.

With that being said...Cam and Luke are our 'core'. Star also, but not quite as key as qb and mob. Smitty and Gross were 'franchise' players.

If 89 is still a core player then freaking LaFell is a core player also.   So is Bell.     All were average to below average,   LaFell and Bell don't have the "PAST" that 89 has though,  so....  of course,  they don't count in most eyes.

Gross - 2nd best lineman on the roster, and a very important player towards Cam's success.

Smith (likely) - the best WR on the roster, Cam's favorite target, and team leader.

Captain Munnerlyn - Best CB on the roster on a great defense.

Ginn - Good returner, good WR, and a guy who made some huge plays for us this season.

Mitchell - Best player on the secondary for the 2nd best defense.

I'd say that's a pretty tough group of players to lose in one season. Although I believe we will be back in the playoffs, it doesn't change the fact we lost a good group of players and it's very possible it shows next season on the field.

I'm not saying they're core players, just contributing ones at the least.

A core player is a player in their prime to build the team around. We have those in Cam, Kuech, CJ, Kraken, Star, and they are all about to be or already in their prime. Letting Smitty, Gross and our old core go was inevitable. And to those who thinks we can't contend are crazy. Maybe we don't have any receivers on paper, but when we sign Nicks, Avant, or Sidney Rice, that will be a start. Until then, we still have DeAngelo, who is more than capable, and J-Stew, who I know has the itch. We WILL be fine.

You would have laughed just as hard if someone said Gettleman should cut Steve Smith the day after the 49ers game. When it actually happens you will try to justify it being smart like you are probably trying to do now.

Core players are no longer core players when their production can easily be replaced via draft or free agency.

Can we really honestly replace both Gross' and Smitty's production? I don't think we'll be able to. And you're ignoring off the field contributions and leadership ability. Not a single person we could bring in to replace either of these two could step in and be a leader. Gross and Smith were the only players remaining from our Super Bowl run a decade ago and had been with the team the longest of anyone. We could draft a guy like Kelvin Benjamin and he could possibly put up 850 some yards and 5-10 tds or something like that (about Smitty's production or better stat-wise) but there's no way he could step in and mentor younger guys like King or McNutt (we don't know how they'll turn out) and even Cam. Neither could Nicks or Decker or anyone else. The biggest loss I think is Gross' and Smitty's influence on Cam's maturation and improvement. It could either pay off big and he'll step in and fill that role, OR he could get down about losing those two and their help and it would hinder his improvements.

Thus you end up with a franchise that doesn't ever win 2 seasons in a row. Is it really hard to see why that is for you guys?

What are you talking about?

What you're advocating (win now) is a short-term strategy that is bound to result in long-term failure at the expense of (possibly) short-term gain. On the other hand, slow-building a good young core (as we're doing) and resisting the urge to overspend on big names is how you build a team that can win year after year over an extended period, not just for 2-3 years before having to rebuild.

During the season: "Our secondary is terrible, must be replaced in the offseason."

After the season: "OH NOES MUNNERLYN HAS AN INTERVIEW THE SKY IS FALLING!!!!!!"

Maybe you just look for dramatic comments but several people say our secondary is fine and then say something about Captain. If we had two competent starting caliber corners then Captain could play a position that is more natural for his size.

Now not only do we lose Munnerlyn but Mitchell as well. Those really were the spark plugs for the secondary. I'm not sure that the next guys up will contribute in the fashion that Captain and Mike did.

How about Mike Mitchell's production? Remember how many years it took us to find competent safeties?

i can get on board with that, but what happens when you simply lose so many that you've (1) lost the ability to easily replace them and (2) when you've plugged a bunch of guys with no chemistry together instead of inserting new guys into an already-existing entity?

i think we'll be fine, and the hysteria is probably unwarranted, but guys like munnerlyn, mitchell, gross, and smith may not be as easily replaced as we seem to assume.

Then you suck.

However, it is only March and I like what Gettleman did last year. I am going to hold off and trust he knows what he is doing here. Something tells me if you could sit down and look at his 5 year plan you would feel much better. Right now we are just reacting to small bits and pieces.

There are different definitions of core player. There's on the field core player (hardy,cj star), locker room core (cam, luke, gross) and fan core players (smitty, captain, mitchell). We've lost a locker room leader, and a few fan favorites, and some players we love to cheer for. There was no way to keep them all.

All of our safeties looked competent this year.

Might have something to do with having the best front 7 in the game.

I am excited for Lester next season.
