Quick Question....

Key part is past, they were no longer core players moving forward. They were part of the old guard of core players.

okay, but however you put it they were both pretty big hits on the overall talent level of this roster.

at what point is a player no longer a core player? don't bother answering, what i'm trying to say is that this thread is bullshit.

By that logic Peyton Manning and Tom Brady aren't core players because they aren't going to be in the league much longer. That's not any different than Gross who is an elite LT, and Smith who is an elite leader and key part of Cam's development.

Try again.

Guess Drew Brees isn't a core player either

Steve Smith is not a core player anymore but he was by far our best WR currently signed with the team. Outside of him, you have players not worth lining up in anywhere in a 5 wide set. Cutting Smith would be easier to swallow if WR was a strength for the team.

None are core players... ie players you build around for the next 5 seasons.

Try again

They're core players if you don't have viable replacements.  We don't.

I ain't even mad about Mitchell.  The Steelers overpaid him by a ton.  If we lose Captain and/or Ginn, I'll wait until I see those contract terms before I decide whether or not I'm mad.

What core player have the Panthers lost this offseason.

I'm all ears.

I was just about to make a long post about this! I think the approach is building a team with a core and then having players that can be plugged into the system, ie, NE Pats. It was no surprise that he was bent on keeping Hardy. Getts is not cheap.

It bothers me to see people bashing Gettlemen.  To me, that reflects a total misunderstanding on nearly every level of the process.  He is cleaning Hurney's mess without mortgaging the future.  He put a winner on the field in year 1.  Do you want back-to-back winning seasons?  Financial health is how to do it.  No emotional attachments--when production falls below compensation, move on.

This team is relevant now.  At this time last year, they were talking about moving it to LA.

Short memories.

gross was a core player, and losing him was big.

steve wasn't the guy you'd build around, but he played an undeniably instrumental part in our success last year.

and that's the difference: there are short-term core guys and long-term core guys. you need both, and we lost a number of short-term core guys that we absolutely must replace.
