So........... was keeping Hardy worth all this?

"all this" isn't because of Hardy, the vast majority of our cap space is tied up in horrible Hurney contracts and dead money

even so it's stupid to jump in on day 1 of free agency when every random halfway decent player is getting stupid overpaid

there are still plenty of quality players left and we'll get them at cheap/reasonable deals by being patient

IF we were losing players we wanted because of Hardy, I would say no. Nothing against Kracken, but our DL is serviceable without him. However, the two have nothing to do with one another. The Smitty situation is not about money, we were not going to pay Mitchell big bucks regardless, we didn't want LaFell. LaFell tweeted a few weeks ago something that basically said, "you can keep that, no thanks." This isn't confirmed, but I believe this was in regard to his discussions with the Panthers about what a contract offer would look like. Gross was going to retire anyway. The only free agent we've lost that I believe we would have liked to keep that may be related to Hardy's high number is Ginn. That sucks, but isn't worth freaking out over.

Our biggest needs are WR, OT, and secondary right now. There hadn't been a run on WR's yet (and the rumors are we're talking to Nicks like you all wanted). Someone like Nicks, Rice, and a draft pick will be affordable and probably better than what we had last year. No Smitty, but from #2 down we're better off. OL is a concern, no doubt, but would have been regardless. I see a couple rookies and one or two cheap vets. The secondary will probably consist of a rookie and one year contracts again, but our front seven has shown they can mask deficiencies there.

The point is... We're okay. We may not win the NFCS this year, but we'll compete and Hardy has nothing to do with any of it.

I think he was worth it.

We kept the younger guy that has his whole career in front of him as oppossed to the veteran who is on the down side of his career.

It was the best decision for the good of the Carolina Panthers.

It isnt always pretty.

indeed it is the only solid decision other than the releases. we still have secondary issue i think. let's not start on the offensive side. even though they were kinda average when we needed it most last season. draft is key for us! it will justify the Hardy signing.

They didn't "keep" Hardy, they rented him for one more year. Until/unless a deal gets done, all it does is soak up money that could be used on weaker positions.

What's to stop Hardy from taking the 13 million and still going to the highest bidder next season? He's no idiot, he said he wants a ton of cash. They can't pay everyone top dollar.

After looking at yesterday's business, no, it definitely wasn't worth tagging Hardy.  I said all along we could have brought in Jared Allen, and he would have given us just as much production as Hardy would have given us this season, at a much lesser price. (Michael Johnson it seems was another option, looking at the contract he signed)  My thinking was you either tag and trade Hardy, or you just let him walk.  Now we will have a great defense, with a very crappy offense.  I don't care how good your defense is, if they are on the field for most of the game they will tire down and become very frustrated.  Our offense will cancel out and rule over our good defense, which will result in a 4-5 win season.  I blame Rivera most of all on the tagging of Hardy.  I think he advocated this move in trying to keep Hardy the most, even more than Gettleman.

Cam can't consistently throw. Thats his fault. Tom Brady would have taken this team to the Super Bowl. Go watch some film and see how many times he was over throwing receivers

Go watch how many times Tom Brady overthrew receivers in the playoffs

It was worth it at first when I thought we were going to contend this upcoming season. But, after this mess it doesnt look like it. We have taken some huge steps back just overnight. Hardy could have 15 sacks again and it wouldnt help. If we cant get a long term deal with Hardy, it def wont be worth it. Keeping him and paying 13mil just for one year while we win 3-4 games will force me to go kill mode.

gano + hardy + bell + scott + anderson + williams + brockel OR ginn + mitchell + hixon + cap + senn ???

hardy influenced the contracts given to cap&mitchell and in a way gano did this same for senn&ginn. ST players value is hurt due to all the touchbacks. plus with the league scoring more punt returners are less valueable too.

the super smart front office people say after finding a QB, DL is the next hardest.

if hardy resigns for long term it was worth it, if not i'll join all the cry babies and bitach about dave.

very reasonable comment unlike the many that have become fanboys.

don't get me wrong huddle, a Strong DE is a good thing but at what expense? No one will convince me that all of these guys would have walked if Hardy walked... okay now that we're done with this all must consider what Hardy himself said prior to the signing: "If I go to another team I don't want to play on a losing team, because I've been there and like winning!" it was clear that he wanted that bread and I can't blame him. therefore, what's the hold up on a official contract? who is to say he will get one or not be in this situation next year. do we not remember Mr. Peppers? Yea everyone felt the same way about him until it was time to release him. Now he sucks to many here. smh.... you guys can say what you want but the truth is the truth, and the truth is, we will not upgrading until Hardy signs a long term "reasonable" contract. If ever! And DG/RR already knew this. That's why everyone rolled out willingly and so fast. We are looking like the team Hardy said he didn't want to be on... this will drag out!
