So........... was keeping Hardy worth all this?

BIG mistake of franchising Hardy. Why do you think he signed the tag so quickly. All of the young FAs have gone between $8-9 million. We should have let him test the market and signed him long term for probably $10-11 million. We are now paying him 50% over market on a 1 year contract and he has no incentive to sign long term if he still wants CJ money. He can holds us up again next year.

The absolute minimum Hardy would have signed for is 12 million. Bennett in Seattle got 7 million because he's a part time player. He doesn't play close to the amount of snaps Hardy does and he's 28 years old. D Ware in Denver got 10 million a year. A 30 year old pass rusher got 10 million. I guarantee you a 25 year old pass rusher would have gotten 12. The way Rosenhaus handles his clients by making more than one visit, I'm pretty sure it would have gone up to 13. We didn't overpay for Hardy. He's had 26 sacks in 2 years and he's 25 years old. The negotiation would start at 12.

johnson and hardy take up  just over 20% of our total cap space and 50%  of the cap on defense. my question is, are they worth that?

my follow up question, if the first question is in the affirmative, is just how sustainable a model is that?

I think CJ is gone next year. Heck Hardy could be gone next year too, Getts is wary of paying a player big after he only shows up in his contract year (I know he has been improving over the years)

Excellent question, Is Hardy really as good as his stats suggest?   67% of his sacks came in 3 games, 2 of those games against Atlanta and the New York Giants....both those teams with horrible left tackles and a struggling line.

In our most important game of the season, Hardy had 0 sacks and 1 solo tackle.

Hardy's value is dictated by the market for DE, more so than his actual talent level.  Everyone takes a look at 15 sacks and immediately is willing to throw big bucks just based on the position and the way the league is set up for premiere passers.

Kraken....Im calling you out!!! Call it what you want but because of your GREED you have cost this team alot. Because of your GREED you have screwed the pooch. It really makes me sick when these guys cry about making millions and their still not happy. People get up everyday in this world and put their lives on the line for peanuts and you cry like a little bitch about millions. Makes me sick.

Greed, that's in all of us.  you can't blame Hardy for wanting to get what he's worth, at any moment on the field he can pretty much destroy a body part and never be able to play again....that's why they command so much guranteed money up front.  don't be fooled, if you call Hardy Greedy, you can very well call Richardson greedy, and everyone else on the team, etc.  Because no one is paid the same within the organization.

Hardy is the best RE in the NFL...no he's not worth it...smh

If you look at any of the top pass rushers, you will see that they did the same thing...got sacks in bunches.

None of our team showed up against SF, so I guess we should let them walk as well? Stfu

I suppose by your reasoning we should discount every assist tackle and it's not a stat worth recording...

No, what I said was that 67% of his sacks came in 3 games, that's not the same as saying "he got sacks in bunches" no poo every great defensive end does that, my point was to point out that the majority of Hardy's production came in 3 games, other top defensive ends last year like Mathis, Quinn, Williams, had a much more disperesed rate of sacks, i.e. they produced their sacks more consistantly than Hardy did, and in more games.

And no , my reasoning for including a solo tackle instead of tackles with asists is because I was analyzing what Hardy contributed on his own only.  Not saying that assisted tackles don't matter, was just looking at his production resulting more so from him alone.

You act like sacks are the only way to measure contribution.

Hardy was first in the league in QB hits

6th in QB hurries

5th among DE in total stops

But you can continue to downplay his production, it's just an opinion and really holds zero merit. He produced like a top-5 DE and he's getting paid the average for the too-5 DEs.

No of course they're not the only way to measure sacs, for my example however they did a good job of showing and comparing

Hardy's performance to the next best defensive ends stat wise.

I think the main point of this thread wasn't whether or not Hardy is a good player, but if whether or not he's worth the cap hit he's given us to sign him.

The main question is if we could have signed a cheaper DE, who would also excel in a similar role to Hardy....and who's to say that isn't a possibility.
