The Panthers Front Office doesn't care what you think

Steve Smith is a solid receiver at best now.   No matter what the inner competitor in him still demands the ball and he's not going to be the go to man anymore.  You can't still have him on your team  and replace him as the go to man.    It would be more insulting to him to replace him with out cutting him first.      64 rec for 745 yards can be replaced by many receivers in the league.   Lets face it Smiths strong point was YAC.  Yes he can still make plays down the field but in his heyday it was all about taking the 5-10 yard pass for 20+  all the time........ its not happening anymore people.  So you have to replace him ........and in doing so he can't be part of the replacement because of his competitive nature.  He will demand the ball.  You seen it last year when he was open and was missed.   Its just a part of him.  Ultimately what made him great ( his nature) is why  we couldn't replace him while he was still here.   I'm sure some of you just will not understand that.

It's just football if you are losing sleep over this you have deeper issues to resolve with yourself...

You are a prime example of emotional attachment clouding the judgement of a fan...

Actually the lack of sleep has nothing to do with football or SS. I'm in residency training to become a pediatrician. Thanks for your input though.

Okay, about this whole "it's a business" thing, and specifically the ostensible business gurus on this particular message board chiding everyone else for not knowing as much businessy business as they do. Yeah, I can see how you saving money on players and clearing more cap space is a business decision, but the problem with this whole business analogy, is that player salaries aren't where franchises make money.

Last I checked, franchises make money from US, the fans. WE pay for tickets, WE pay for $9 beers, WE pay for merchandise. So if you are going to insist on sticking with this "it's a business" mantra, then keep this in mind: What pays their bills is what keeps us happy, and the tens of millions they gain by cutting Smith is insignificant compared to the hundreds of millions they stand to lose by pissing off the loyal fans and putting a crappy product on the field.

So to those who keep saying it's a business decision, here is a business analogy for you: You own a restaurant. And to save a couple thousand dollars per month, you cut your most popular item (Did I say most popular? I meant all-time best selling, Michelin star rated, and Zagat reviewed dish) from the menu, and replace it with...well nothing basically. You've promised the customers that you're going to replace it with something similar eventually, but something much cheaper, and you're not really sure of the quality. So yeah, you saved a couple bucks, but you just gave a HUGE middle finger to your customers. But even so, you expect them to come back and keep shelling out money like they used to, because hey! After all it's the same restaurant isn't it?

Business.

This x 1,000,000

You seem to have missed a huge concept with this. They aren't tying to replace it with something that is just cheaper. They are looking to replace it with something that has more future potential. They are opening  a new franchise in a new type of market that has more growth potential for the same investment. Would you rather invest in Burger King or Jimmy Johns?

Sorry folks, the FO does not care what people think.

They don't care what the players think...

They don't care what the coaches think...

They don't care about the Panthers heritage or the legacy of its players...

And they sure as shlt don't care about its fans...

...all they care about is money. The easy cop out you hear time and time again, is "the NFL is a business." Which it's true, it is a business, it's an entertainment business. Winning is a big part of being "entertained". But equally, a big part of the entertainment is the faces that represent your business. And sometimes you have to make sacrifices, at the risk of losing money, to ensure your customers are happy.

It is very sad and embarrassing how the Panthers "Corporation" has handled the Steve Smith situation. I would not be surprised if the FO also mishandled other vets with no respect (i.e. Gross).

So from here on out, I will no longer refer to the Front Office as FO, but rather, FU.

You ever thought that 89 was just not right for the chemisty of this young team moving forward?

(And trust me today hurt me just as much as any Panthers fan. IT SUCKS! But its the right move)

We haven't even released Smitty yet and your analogy assumes that we won't make an effort to replace him with a better alternative.

Replacing Smitty is one thing (and frankly I doubt you would find a better alternative)., making a move that leaves us with NO receivers is entirely another.

The fact is, we aren't going to make a spashy free agency WR pick-up. We can't afford it. We aren't exactly in position to grab a top WR. So my analogy assumes that we have gotten rid  of our last even remotely viable receiver, and we intend to replace him with a WR who will HAVE to step in and be a day 1, #1 WR (good luck with that with a pick in the late 20s) and a bunch of bargain basement WRs who manage to avoid being snapped up by other franchises. And we have to build our stable of receivers, AND a starting caliber O-Line with a handful of draft picks, and no money.

That, my friend, sucks.

What captroop said was one of the dumbest, most incomparable commentaries on this situation I've seen here so it's no surprise venom cosigned it

Thank you for your ad hominem argument. If you can't refute what I said, then don't bother insulting me. It's just not cricket.

Remind me how we finished last year on offense.  In the bottom half of the league.  Everyone complains we don't have weapons and Gettleman is doing just that which is getting us weapons  But we decide that Smith is not the weapon he once was and is moving on to find other upgrades. Since we have to always stay under the cap we can't upgrade until we get rid of what we have.

Sure he hasn't done it yet but in order to sign folks long term he needs to manage the cap this year and next year as well.  Getting rid of Smitty is a long term move not a 2014 only move.  So until we upgrade I know folks will continue to complain.  Too bad we will have to put up with 1000s of whiny posts for the next couple of months until we actually do upgrade.  Problem is that posters will make one post about how they were wrong but in the meantime we will have to put up with the constant complaining.  Do me a favor, for every post you make now complaining about the FO, make one in a few months admitting you were wrong and have no clue what is going on.  If you need help I will be glad to keep count and remind you of who you are.

For the most part it is a business but it doesn't mean Jerry and the guys up top don't care about their players.

Heck Jerry had so much respect for smith for all he has done he invited him to dinner. Kinda of a big Thank You for everything you have done for us.

Jerry even flew Greg Olsen and his new born son in his private plane to get heart surgery. He was even in there asking important questions because Jerry has been thru heart problems and wants the best for the kid.

Sometimes hard things have to be done. You will get over faster if you have a better understanding of the people around you and not being so self centered.

He forgot to mention that this is the bizarro restaurant business where there is a hard cap on how much each one can spend and dishes become eligible to field offers from other restaurants every few years.
