Steve Smith Will Not Be In a Panthers Uniform Next Season

Recommended Posts

Antonio Brown, Dez Bryant, Jordy Nelson, Anquan Boldin...these are all good receivers that do a lot for their team, and are all in the $2-$4MM range. IMO this is where Smitty should be at this point. If he is unwilling, then you need to move on. We can't pay him like he is Julio Jones or AJ Green anymore because he simply isn't that player.

Dez Bryant is finishing out his rookie contract and he will get PAID!!! Not relevant or a good analogy.

So I want to know if Brandon LaFell put up EXACTLY the same stars as Smitty this year, the exact same amount of clutch 3rd down catches, the exact number of drive-saving plays, I mean everything exactly the same, would people still be having multiple 40 page discussions on this subject? I doubt it, that's how you can tell you are forming an opinion on the matter based off emotion and not business. Hurney and Fox did this for 10 years and it got us nowhere. So I don't understand when the Hurney antithesis Gettleman comes in its still constant bitching. Is it just something people like to do so the person in charge or what they do really doesn't matter?

So Cam doesn't have to balls to stand up and lead?

Awesome.

Outside of Peyton and Brady,  what qb could come in and overpower 89 for  total leadership of the offense?   Part of the reason most of us love Smith is because he's not afraid to get in the face of another player and tell them to stop fracking up. I can really only see Peyton and Brady having the balls to do the same back to 89 ,  if they were his qb.

Even Delhomme,  with his ranting and rallying,  couldn't overpower the might of the 89 personality.    Which is why Smith has been the face of our offense for so many years.

Jordy Nelson's stats do not compare to SS and to think he is in the conversation as SS I find funny. Aaron Rodgers is his Qb by the way....but Nelson is $4.5 against the cap and looking for a new deal.

You read to deep into my posts young grasshopper. I wasn't comparing him to those players, every single one of them is way better than Smitty at this point in their respective careers, I was simply pointing out contract sizes, and what Smitty should be making at this point.

It's really too far into the realm of speculation to say--however, considering the personnel in 2013 was comparable to 2012, I can't help but focus more on offensive style than individual players.

Plus all of this is inextricable. Slower offense precludes rhythm and stalls drives, keeps players from getting into the flow of the game, enhances drops, plus we're utilizing tight ends more...who knows. It's like a quantum physics puzzle getting answers in this sport.

What I was getting at is that once the ball is in Smith's hands nothing prevents him from making a play with it.  The offense can't really be blamed for his average yards after catch dropping from 6.0 to 2.8 or 20+ yard catches dropping from 29 to 4 over the last two years..  He's not the same player he was no matter what style of offense we're running.
