Steve Smith Will Not Be In a Panthers Uniform Next Season

Recommended Posts

I don't care if Jeff Davidson is your OC, if Cam is your QB and you are the #1 receiver and can't get to 800 yards and 5 TDs you aren't being very productive.

The 2012 Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens seem to have done fine without one.

Well... think about how good of a WR we can get with that high draft pick!!!  Always be positive!

Do we still have our front 7 on defense?  If so we will be alright.

Let TD's knee blow out again or any one of Hardy, Johnson, or Luke go down, just one of the four, and see what happens.

You realize of course you are making MadHatter's point for him right?

Whether or not Smitty's dip in production was because of scheme or because of a drop in ability, he is not worth what we are paying him. Contracts should be base on importance to what you are doing. We emphasize a monster front four so what happened??? Errmergherd Hardy got paid. If we were more like Seattle and based off monster secondary coverage, you can bet your bottom dollar he would've been let go. Does that mean he isn't worth it? Nope, just not worth it to us for what we want to do. If possession and ball control is what we want to do, and that's why Olsen had a better year than Smitty, than wouldn't it make sense to not pay Smitty $7MM this year then $18MM over the next two for minimal production?

If we are running the offense you say then every dime we have to spare on offense should be going to possession type receivers like Nicks or draft a big boy like Benjamin or pickup a second TE that'll move the chains for $3MM per year.

I hate to use silly internet memes like your argument is invalid, but your argument truly is invalid.

Not at all invalid.

Just because he isn't catching 1100 yards based on the current scheme doesn't mean he is not an 1100 yard WR when needed. The 750 yards he caught were critical catches in a ball control offense that if not caught means we are no longer 12-4. If he were not a top 10 WR in the league then we would not be a 12-4 team. My point is SS's production is not recorded in yards, but in quality of play and leadership.

Not who you were asking, but I would considering being responsible for over a fifth of your quarterback's passing yardage in a terrible ball-control, low possession offense as production.

It was actually a very successful ball control offense. We were ranked 5th.

Maybe some sort of new age analytics came into play?

Maybe with Steve Smith HIMSELF saying he was in it for catches and yards and career numbers and wanting the ball all the time, maybe the FO decided in order for Cam to truly take the training wheels off and be the perennial MVP candidate they may think he can be, maybe Cam needs to decide who the fuging ball goes to. Maybe they think that Cam is so focused on going to Smitty that it hinders the offense. If you think about it, how many games did you watch and see yards left on the field because Cam was too focused on Steve Smith. I used to think nothing of it but in hindsight, maybe it really has hindered things in their opinion after evaluating and watching tape. You get Nicks, re-sign Ginn, keep Olsen and draft a guy, maybe it truly becomes his offense and blossoms into way more than it ever could have before?

Or maybe I'm talking out of my ass, who knows?

DG is going to take his lumps here...and he should take some.

But, he's not the complete bad guy here. Hurney is still haunting us and will be until those God-awful contracts are off the books. Sucks at the moment, but it's the best long-term move for locking up Cam/Luke and giving them the keys to the franchise.

You are missing the point. If that's his role, you can get a much you get guy to fulfill that role for a much, much cheaper price. I love Smitty, but you can't keep him at that price just because he has a 99 HEART rating on Madden.
