Do Gettleman and Co Feel the Panthers Overachieved Last year?

We definitely overachieved. But, our schedule should be easier this season, so...there's that.

Too an extent. I thought we made some really good scrap signings in FA last year ala mitchell ginn cole and signed undrafted fa like lester and white. I thought we had a good shot to push for wildcard at 10-6 or 9-7 and we pulled the div championship.

Half of the cuts this off-season haven't even occurred yet so lets wait it out before we condemn too quickly lol

At 12-4 and perhaps on the cusp of a deep Playoff run this year a team might be tempted to keep the nucleus together and maybe even add or keep a couple contracts that might not be too cap friendly in a year or two?

But Getts seems rather flip about the roster and is apparently comfortable losing a lot of core players.

No hysteria here but is it possible Leadership at BofA feels the Panthers had a lucky streak, overachieved last year and are still in need of major overhauls and another year of contract purging before they expect yearly Post Season runs?

I think people just are confused about who the core really is....

We'll build around Newton this year and it too will pay off.

He is about to enter his 4th season...... And we have done nothing to help him on offense. Unprecedented IMO.

Since I don't do this for a living I'm going to assume there's a hidden master plan somewhere.   People who actually get paid to be NFL GMs don't go into any season thinking it will be a rebuild.  They are too competitive for that.  The way some of this has been handled is bad but again I will give the benefit of the doubt to Gettleman...for now.

We had one of the toughest schedules in the league and still were two plays from getting to 14-2.

Not many were expecting the kind of season we had, especially considering the schedule and question marks at DT, DB and WR.

Heck, after our offensive linemen, JStew and Godfrey went down and we started out losing the close games I thought we were in for a long season too.

I knew we had some stars going into the season but couldn't have predicted the type of play we saw from those questionable areas I mentioned earlier. I could say that we overachieved, but now I know what these guys are capable of, the secret to our success and I honestly think the best is ahead of us.

Do I think we will get mistaken for overachievers anytime soon...no way. That bar has been raised pretty high and anything less than the playoffs, as long as this core stays intact, will be a disappointment. I expect improvement from our core and that is really saying something, because they are really freakin' good as is.

That would explain a lot. Gross was the only core player that we lost, in my opinion...but his retirement was eminent.

Apparently, according to many of the doom and gloomers, our "core players" is a relative term consisting of any player that they felt "played good," last season. Meh...

Our core players elevated the play of their teammates. Why is that so hard for people to grasp? Full-on, I guess?

How do you not see that he IS keeping the nucleus together. Steve Smith is about to be 35 he is not part of the Nucleus. LaFell, Ginn.... not part of the Nucleus. Mitchell, Captain.... not part of the Nucleus. We have lost ZERO core players and we won't lose any.

Luke-CJ-Hardy-TD-Star-Short on defense

 

Build around them and that is exactly what he is doing. This is what his plan was last year, we just had, and I can't believe I am saying this, really good coaching that got the most out of our front 7 on Defense and Cam on offense.

He however is sticking to his plan from day one instead of over reacting and doing what got us in this bad place to begin with. We are not in win now mode. Denver is and for good reason Manning has 1 year left MAYBE two.

Cam has a decade left in the tank. He made magic happen last year, we could do it again. But he and WE should not want him to completely waste what he has done last year in the hopes we could win this year.

We are 1 maybe 2 years away from being THE TEAM to beat. We just have to be patient.

The only core player they have lost so far is Jordan Gross - and Gettleman had little to nothing to do with that.  Losing Mike Mitchell hurts on paper but the deal he got in Pittsburgh was ridiculous and Carolina wouldn't have been able to afford him.  He benefited from a strong front 7 like much of Carolina's secondary anyway.  

 

Carolina's core is in place - they need some help on the O-Line and at WR but overall the team is still in great shape to contend with one of the best front 7's in the league and an emerging star QB.  They didn't overachieve, this is a talented team and there's still a lot to be excited about.

Gettleman came in last year pretty clearly under the impression that it was going to take a while to field a good team and that it was going to have to be done his way.

While I'm sure he enjoyed the winning season, I think a part of him feels it was a burden because it only strengthens the ties to that succesful team when he is deadset determined to tear it all down and build it up his way. I think he feels it was an inconvenience in his ultimate goal to build his own roster. The way he has handled the 89 situation reeks of nothing but "No, this is my team" and it bleeds of arrogance. He better be successful and I don't mean two or three seasons from now. We had the nucleus to be good next year and stay good but I believe he is so wrapped up in tearing down the poor situation he perceived himself walking into last year that he is trying to force "new era" type moves, regardless of the logic.
