Saints sign Jairus Byrd

an issue that can be manipulated again in the future, and if they do decide to bring in another guy, they will. the panthers do it to get under the cap, while teams like the saints do it to get top notch talent. hell even the Steelers who never go out and sign FAs did  so this year so far. i do know that it is the first day, and most of the signings dont bother me, but the saints obtaining Byrd makes them that much better.

panthers have been cap strapped and in rebuilding mode since 2010.

What does this tell you about pushing the problems further and further down the line? Gettleman is trying to get the team to the point where we have ~8 core players to build around and then be able to fill the holes with blue chip free agents as we can afford them. We aren't to that point yet. We are slowly building to it and the progress is obvious. We are hitting on our draft picks which is essential to a plan like this. If we keep at it for the next 2 seasons we can have our core locked up, a good collection of young talent that we have drafted, key veterans, and be able to bring in the free agents we covet to fill the holes. Give it time. This is still a very good football team.

And btw Jairus Byrd is a great signing... providing he stays healthy. Saints are in panic mode. They have a 35 year old future Hall of Fame QB that likely won't play much longer, an elite tight end they likely can't pay long term, and a good enough collection of talent on both sides of the ball to try to make a run at a Super Bowl. If it works, they go into rebuilding mode afterwards. If it fails, they go into rebuilding mode afterwards. It's just that type of situation. Very different from our own.

slowly building is exactly what the panthers are doing. the core can be locked up no matter what happens this year because again, the cap can be manipulated plus their will be an increase in the ceiling for that cap. byrd is a great signing for them, and makes them that much better. with 2 different situations, both team did play in the 2nd round of the playoffs, but while one sits back and wait, the other goes out and makes some things happen.

i bet Graham signs a long term contract as well.

the lockout provided this team with a perfectly good opportunity to straighten their cap out and it invested that cap unwisely.  Now there is just some new guy here trying to put the pieces together for the 2nd time around..
