Smith to 49'ers?

NO. Trade one of your best players to the team that knocked you out of the playoffs?? BRILLIANT. Just cut him so he can either retire or sign with the Broncos.

Cut him and receive nothing over trade him and receive nothing? Brilliant strategy...not

I'm torn. I want Smitty to succeed, but living in the SF Bay Area...49ers fans are just some kind of insufferable you can't imagine.

Think of the Steelers fans that invade BOA all the time, but instead of frumpy losers from an awful industrial city, you get a shitty mix of youngsters with neck tattoos who vaguely remember back when their team was a dynasty but treat it like it was yesterday, and then arrogant rich kids from the suburbs wearing Kaepernick jerseys with espn magazine body issue posters on their wall.

Ugh...fug my life if this happens I'll never hear the end of it. Especially if he wins a ring there? All I'll ever hear is that he's more of a 49er because he won a ring there. Not to mention the non-stop talk of Cam not winning one with him.

I will completely abandon any hope of there being a god who loves me if this happens. Sorry guys, I would love a sixth but this simply cannot happen.

guaranteed money

Doesn't matter.  The Panthers would still owe him his guaranteed money (signing bonus) and that money would be accelerated and included in this year's cap.  Cut or trade, it doesn't matter.  The cap hit is gonna be the same regardless.  You don't trade a signing bonus, you own that one no matter what.

Not sure that this is true.  If he is traded then the new team takes that contract.

Pro Football Spot ‏@pfspot 2m

Rumors are swirling that the #49ers are dangling a sixth-round draft pick to the #Panthers for Steve Smith. Could happen. Might not.

Is there a website link to their rumor section?  I could not find any mention.

The base, yes.  The signing bonus, no.

Salary-cap hits: The prorated part of a signing bonus will always count toward that year's cap. But because every dollar counts toward the salary cap, teams must add the remainder of a signing bonus if they cut or trade a player.
