I agree, but that's a whole different conversation. And you also can't discount the personal growth that comes from failure, a change of scenery, and new coaching. These are people, not robots and it takes some weird things sometimes for them to reach their potential.

Mathis was given plenty of chances and just sucked, I think the change of scenery did him a lot of good.

Schwartz, however, I was a bit miffed when we let him go. It seem premature.

Mathis started 15 games in 06 and only appeared in one his third season. He might not have been great but he was a guy we drafted who was at least useful backup and worth developing.  Hindsight is 20/20 but it seemed odd to give up on him like that.

He had three years to prove himself, after leaving Carolina he spent two more years struggling before finally putting it together in Philly, his sixth year in the league.

I hate it didn't work out, but he got a fair shot here, IMO.

Schwartz missed the entire season and had multiple hip surgeries. Letting him go was justified at the time, same as with Mathis.

This is only partially correct he did very well with the bengals....

Didn't his bengals career consist of him being a backup and only starting five games over the course of three years?
