Interesting Gantt perspective on Smith Situation

Not sure if you saw what I said in the other thread about Smitty's meeting with gettleman, but there was more to the reasoning of dropping Smith that I didn't mention because it seemed like speculation, however now it seems pretty legit.

From what the guy told my friend (The guy is good friends with Smitty which is why he knew so much in the first place) Smitty is a type A personality, we all know that. Gettleman didn't think that Cam would be able to come into his own as a leader and captain with Smitty still on the squad. He thinks that Smitty's personality is too big and would hinder Cam's growth as a leader. Getts said it is time for Cam to lead.

Apparently Cam tried to take up for smitty but Gettleman wasn't having any of it. Also Steve thought the big cat (Richardson) would be in the meeting last week but he wasn't.

I could see that situation with Smith the past three years, from just listening to his comments.

Smitty, always wants or feels he deserves the ball. And that could put a lot of pressure on Cam, if/when he feels Smitty's not open enough (but Smitty himself does).

I would also like to add (cause so many people forget this): Smitty was the one that went to Brent Jensen, and kindled a bonfire for the national press, when he commented on what he said to Cam on the sidelines.

That was total lack of leadership and immaturity on Smith's part, but no one noticed. This is especially true, when Smith openly sulked himself on the sidelines when he made a bad play, not more than a few games later when he mouthed off to Jensen about Cam.

He ignores (and knowingly so) the money Smith is going to make in 2015 and 2016.  This move isn't all about the short-term, which everyone is too focused on.  Yes, cutting Smith doesn't do much for us this year, but it does a lot for us next year, especially in a year (2015) where we will need all the money we can with Kuechly sitting there waiting for (and deserving of) an extension, Greg Hardy set to be a free agent, and the elephant in the room in Cam Newton as everyone wonders what is his asking price.

There is no reason to think Gettleman is releasing Smith for personal reasons other than for people to unfairly pile on Gettleman because they refuse to move forward.

The difference in the future cap hits from cutting Smith now vs next year is 2 million.

This seems very reasonable just like your original post did from a week or so ago on the topic. Many people will find it hard to accept just like what you said before but I think it is highly probable. Just like when the "rumors" that Smitty may leave started surfacing so are the rumors that this is a locker room thing and not only a money thing. Many people will say "Stop being a sheep of the media, they are just trying to start trouble." This locker room thing has been speculated for some time now, and people just want to stick their head in the sand and act like this media driven nonsense.

Gettleman wants to turn this team over to the young leaders in Cam and Luke and that can't be truely done with Steve around. Not a knock on Steve, it's just what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. It's a business and it's better to let go of someone too early than too late. Blind loyalty is what got the Panthers in trouble in the first place and those days are over. It's a good thing if you are a Panther's fan, but not if you are a bigger fan of certain players.

Gantt is retarded, of course its about the money, its always about the money.

If the Panthers keep Smitty under this current deal by picking up the 3 mill option bonus they are on the hook for 10 mill in 2015 and 12 mill in 2016 to a 37 year old WR.

1: Savings not this year but next, and the following.

2: Demonstrative personality, paired with a happy go lucky personality of the QB.

3: Age, and his dip in production vs. price.

4: Entire receiving corps needs an overhaul.

This is why SS will take a pay cut (said already that he won't) or be a June 1 cut.
