Interesting Gantt perspective on Smith Situation

If we're looking at the "locker room" thing, then I guess what is the locker room thing?

Steve is known to be hyper competitive, and doesn't take crap.  He works harder than about anyone else, but in the last few years, has taken it on to be more of a mentor.  Is this about the LaFell thing?  He was campaigning hard to get LaFell resigned, but that doesn't look likely to happen until later.

I feel like this is kind of a bad "statement" for Gettleman to make.  He's our most productive WR, he accounted for 20% of our receiving statistics, and can still make clutch plays.  We don't gain much by cutting him (even as a June 1st cut), and he's the only WR under contract.  So basically Gettleman would be saying "There is no such thing as a sacred cow."  If he's going to be that cut throat, we'd better be close to that 12-4 next year, or that message isn't going to carry too well.

That great analysis you speak of us pure speculation on his part.

na .. the numbers are not speculation. It's basic math. The other part of his analysis may be his opinion - but based on the math it's hard to disagree with what he has to say.

I think Gettlemans end game is to get Smith to retire... Smith probably doesn't wanna go anywhere else in his career and Gettleman is trying to save every penny that he can, but cutting Smith makes no financial sense... Cutting him, even with the June 1st designation will save less than he's worth

What did he say in that article that sounds like he's trolling? Sounds like a great analysis of the situation IMO.

He ignores (and knowingly so) the money Smith is going to make in 2015 and 2016.  This move isn't all about the short-term, which everyone is too focused on.  Yes, cutting Smith doesn't do much for us this year, but it does a lot for us next year, especially in a year (2015) where we will need all the money we can with Kuechly sitting there waiting for (and deserving of) an extension, Greg Hardy set to be a free agent, and the elephant in the room in Cam Newton as everyone wonders what is his asking price.

There is no reason to think Gettleman is releasing Smith for personal reasons other than for people to unfairly pile on Gettleman because they refuse to move forward.

the question is why?

I believe JR ended his local stint covering the Panthers when he called-out Dareeeen (as he put it) for writing an article that was completely false.  He referenced it several times during a press conference and mocked him by not pronouncing his name correctly. Gantt was at the press conference.  It wasn't long after that Gantt was gone.

I read the article and, once again, think Gantt is trying to provide insight where he has none.  It has nothing to do with leadership, conflicts, etc.  It has to do with age and $$.  Lets not make it uglier than it already is.  IMHO

For me ... I am not too surprised.  The bigger question is what will our new GM do this week to fill the holes.  He already said that free agency is to fill the holes so we don't go into the draft with glaring needs.  That means we will be signing DBs, WRs and OT(s).  I expect the Panthers will be active during free agency.  Question is ... will it be early this week with any big names.

I think if the Panthers do cut him, Steve has found some motivation for another year or two.

As a competitor I think so, but I don't think he wants to relocate his family and he has a baby on the way. So i'll be surprised if he signs elsewhere, he should walk away with his health much in the same way that Gross did.

great points .. but Smith's contract isn't the only contract that is going to affect our ability in the future to sign these other players. Actually, it would make more sense to get him to restructure. Especially based on the Smith's cap number this year (in addition to future years).

That being said - maybe they wanted Smith to restructure and he refused?

Not sure if you saw what I said in the other thread about Smitty's meeting with gettleman, but there was more to the reasoning of dropping Smith that I didn't mention because it seemed like speculation, however now it seems pretty legit.

From what the guy told my friend (The guy is good friends with Smitty which is why he knew so much in the first place) Smitty is a type A personality, we all know that. Gettleman didn't think that Cam would be able to come into his own as a leader and captain with Smitty still on the squad. He thinks that Smitty's personality is too big and would hinder Cam's growth as a leader. Getts said it is time for Cam to lead.

Apparently Cam tried to take up for smitty but Gettleman wasn't having any of it. Also Steve thought the big cat (Richardson) would be in the meeting last week but he wasn't.

Then why not cut him next year?
