Interesting Gantt perspective on Smith Situation

"He’d have cost $7 million to keep on the cap this year, and they’ll carry $6 million worth of accelerations for him to be elsewhere (assuming a post-June 1 designation). That means they have to replace their best receiver with effectively $1 million worth of space. Check that, their only receiver. At a time when they needed more wideouts, they made the conscious choice to have none."

While he may be correct, I no longer accept anything Gantt says as anything more than speculation.  He has turned into a bitter shell of his former self and rarely manages to make a comment or write an article (even one not related to the Panthers), without taking a dig at the team.

Regardless of Gantt's opinion, he is correct.

It obviously has nothing to do with skill. When Smith is the only actual player under contract at the position and is still talented, then you have to rule that out. It has nothing to do with money, as this hurts us.

This is about Gettleman making a statement. One that will hurt this team. And that has nothing to do with "business."
