I was at the home opener in 08 when we played Houston and got trounced. This was the game where Smitty had that meaningless, ridiculous touchdown spinning and breaking tackles. This team still needs that.

When I created my current sig, I knew there was the possibility that Smitty would be gone too. Kinda hoped it wouldn't happen, but deep down I knew...

Come September, a team that I won't recognize will take the field at BOA wearing the uniform of the team I've been watching since they were created.

It's gonna be a really odd feeling.

Steve Smith will be remembered by every football fan--not just Panthers fan--as the fierce competitor that he always was. Steve put the electric in Carolina's electric blue. He never gave up, never said die, and loved to be doubted if for no other reason than to prove you wrong. I could say he gave his all in every play of every game (practice, too), but feel that I'd be selling him short. At his best there was no one better, at his worst he was still better than most.

 

This sounds way more like a eulogy than I intended. The guy's not dead, simply another victim of the ruthless business that is professional sports.

My favorite play was a meaningless game against the eagles, Smitty goes high for a classic Jake heave, a LB pops him mid air, the LB falls off and Smitty somehow defied the laws of physics and kept his momentum and extended the play more, meanwhile, called LB had a broken nose.

Ask me in another year.  For right now, all I'm going to remember is Smitty being treated with something bordering on blasphemy at worst and akin to near apathy at best before he was summarily advised that we don't want or need his services any longer.

 

 

Is it politically correct or practical from a what-is-best-for-the-franchise sense? Right now, I don't give a poo.

I would say the xclown pass against the Rams. That was one of the, if not greatest, Panthers play I've ever seen.
