Panthers attempting to trade Steve Smith.

I'm actually talking about Cam leaving because just like the Cavs we haven't given him much help. Hell we are actually taking players away from him.

Need to wait and see what they do.  If they add a FA like Rice or Nicks.  And then add a WR (cooks, benjamin, etc) in the first....our WR position is better off than before.

As I've been saying all along, it's not about Saving Money with Smith. It's actually about getting him out of the locker room. Several of the inside sources with the team are saying that Smith was causing some issues in the locker room last year.

With that said, a June 1st cut would save the Panther's 1 million this season, possibly 2 depending on if he's got a kicker in his option bonus.

His contract breaks down as 3 million guaranteed base salary, 2 million bonus, 1 million kicker. Cap hit of 6 million with the kicker and 5 million with out it.

Next season his cap hit would be 4 million and all of it would be the remaining bonus left on his contract, which saves the team 6 million dollars. It also cuts off 12 million in the 2016 season as well.

Trading him cost the team, 2 million this year with a cap hit of 9 million on the books. Which is his salary of 3 million and the 6 million left in bonus money. However it saves the team 10 million next season and actually saves the team more money over the next three seasons.

Welcome to the real NFL....it is all about $ and business. And that is not just the owners, but the players too.

Fans get all emotional about this. Most players are NOT fans of the teams they play for. They are employers.

Who exactly is the NFL for if not the fans. No fans = No league.

Anyway not the point.

I've never met or even spoken to 89 but the thought of not seeing him on Sundays was something I was preparing myself for. Just not ready and to see it happen like this just feels wrong.

This is epically ridiculous, though. Your GPOAT is getting treated like trash. We have no viable #1 waiting in the wings and he should be allowed to finish his career here! For all that he has done and meant to this organization and city?? Come the hell on man!!!

LOL

SMH.

"AceBoogie", believe it or not, the Panthers were around before Cam Newton.

They were also around before Steve Smith, and will be around after him.

Let the poo work itself out before you kill yourself. Damn.

I was a panther fan long before Cam, but I'll tell you one thing Cam is the best qb we've ever had and Steve is the best player we've ever had and it's not close. Cam Newton's don't fall off fuging trees. Look at the qbs coming out every year. Cam Newton is rare. You don't put hubcaps on a Lamborghini

It is definitely tough and emotional....mainly because it was unexpected.

Let's see how it all plays out.

if it was on his terms is one thing but to be handled like this is another. we all knew he would be gone at some point but i would have at least like to have seen him call it.

I'm not happy with how this whole scenario has played out, but I will reserve full judgement on Gettleman's decision until I see what happens next. He always knew this would be a controversial move, so I admire the balls it must have taken to do this. But even still, he could have handled it better and he needs to make sure that Cam goes into the season with weapons we know can help. Lots of work to do yet.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
