I agree, I think Gman is trying to force Smith to restructure/retire.  a trade would mean he would have to uproot his family

 

And at this point, why would any team trade for him if he's gonna be cut and they can offer him a contract afterwards? It's like when the Bucs tried to shop Freeman around and then cut him and the Vikes grabbed him. If he's cut or traded he's gonna have to move anyway.

I wouldn't go that far, but I agree that the "he can teach young WRs something" argument is pretty weak. We have Proehl here as a WR coach which is better because Smith has so much talent, and you can't teach talent. Proehl was talented, but relied more on choosing his spots, knowing his role, and working on the fundamentals, all important things that need to be passed on to young WRs, particularly those who have their own specific set of skills and talents. Smith is valuable as a receiver and as the heartbeat and fire of the team, but he isn't a teacher.
