Panthers attempting to trade Steve Smith.

In Gman I trust.

89 will get like $7M from us + whatever he gets from another team, if we cut him. 89 will get his.

I love the guy, but no more crap of holding onto veterans for sentimental purposes. Especially if the front office feels as if they can upgrade. I don't know if they feel this way.... which is why I said "IF".

And no one knows who may be brought in...part of my point

lol like who? If we sign the best WR in this FA class we still need more talented players at the position to be competitive. If we wager all our chips on a high end draft pick then not only do you have the above issue, you are uncertain to his success. The 3 players listed above were established or as close as you could get to being so.

Replacing Steve Smith with someone else still means we have a desperate need at the WR position.

I also don't see how Hardy is that big of a risk. He has virtually the same skill-set, if not better than, as CJ. Hardy's first couple years weren't special because he was on special teams, the rest of our D stunk, and he always would drop back into coverage as a DE covering TE's. Thats why he had 11 pass deflections two years ago. The fact that his tackles have stayed the same shows he is as good as we think at playing the run, and most DE's are usually feast or famine when it comes to sacks. I am fine with him not having any sacks for 8 of 16 games as long as he is getting QB hits and pressures. My main wish is for him to actually show up in the playoffs, provided we find our way back there in the near future.

All I know is this fan base is way too use to how Hurney runs things, not how a real NFL GM runs things. If Hurney didn't pass out so many ridiculous contracts, Gettleman would not be in the tough position that he is in. He is having to make a lot of tough business decisions to get us to where we need to be long term. Smith had maybe a year or two left, and who knows he could still be coming back. Also, maybe he understands the situation and will retire a Panther. All I know, is the fans are getting mad a the wrong GM, and they need to quit there fuging crying. It's annoying as hell.

^^^ This all day long.

It has been documented within this thread that outright cutting Smith would be financially detrimental to the team.

I don't disagree with that, I was responding to you saying that its a travesty that Smith may/will be cut while Stewart remains. My point is that Stewart is only staying on the roster because cutting him would have a worse impact on the cap than cutting Smith, since Stew has two more years than Smith left on his contract. I think cutting Smith is a bad idea, but cutting Stewart is as bad or worse.

Anyone who thinks this is personal between Gettleman and Smith is an idiot. This is business, pure and simple. It hurts because Smith is such a legend on this team, but he has clearly lost a step and for the sake of the long-term future this move had to be made.

The business side of the NFL is often ugly.

Other than parroting catchy terms you heard ESPN say every time a player is cut, please explain to me how parting with a talented player with no replacement and hurting yourself financially is viable "business" practice in this profession.

LOOK THATS JUST THE NATURE OF THE BEAST OKAY IT MAY NOT BE ADVANTAGEOUS IN ANY CAPACITY BUT IT MAKES ME FEEL COOL TO BE "RESERVED" AND STUFF.

I don't get how some folks are acting like we suddenly have nothing at WR---losing a 35-year old speed WR shouldn't be considered "emptying the cupboards".

I wish Smitty would have agreed on a pay cut.  Maybe he shops himself a bit and returns to take a $3m per deal.

I will give you guys some things to think about.

1. Gman makes the infamous statement during Combine week.  Just to be hard on Smitty?  Really? Or letting the rest of the league know there might be a chance they can have him.

2. Not sure what he will bring in a trade, but Smith himself might have asked for this just to see if he could squeeze a couple more seasons out at big dollars.

He won't get em here.  He and Gman might have a deal where Steve can approve the trade as far as location.

3, The fact that the trade talk is being leaked might mean there truly is interest in him.  I personally think the Ravens would be a good fit.  They lost Boldin and Ray Lewis and just seemed to lose their swagger last season.

4. The reaction here is typical jr high, knee jerk stuff that had to come out.  We would see the same stuff next year this time when he had lost an add'l step and costs an add'l million or two.  The NFL is not a place where you have 20 yr careers unless you are a kicker.  Same people bitching about Smith leaving probably put up "double trouble ain't going nowhere" a few seasons back.  The foresight is not incredibly strong here.  Smith is firey and a trash talker, but that no longer makes his performance that of a pro bowler, in fact, he has traded his diminishing skill set for trash talk and occasional asshattery.  But he is our asshat, so we like it.

5.  Cam Newton could actually benefit from this move.  He can now claim the offense at a minimum and possibly the team, especially with Gross and Smitty being gone.  He had better anyway.

6.  One note, this thread would be about 7 pages less if the word "fug" was banned, proving emotion is high and common sense hard to find.

1. When your running a business its best not to commit to anything until you know all the variables.

2. Smith said he wanted to play through 2016. That is the only fact you know. Saying "he's not getting them here" is empty and said absolutely nothing.

3. The fact that there is trade talk is always beneficial to the media and the agents who cook up the stories.

4. Meh I always kind of felt that we overpaid dub trubs, but only to set a precedent for the league in the wage scale for RB's. Our owner was indeed one of the main faces of that ordeal so it only appeared to me that he was trying to express how much value he thought D'lo had. . . and that he wasnt cheap.

5. Cam could actually regress from the move also. We would have to wait and see.

6. Did you read all of the pages? or did you just jump here to the end, Stirs?

Cutting or tradin doesnt help our cap situation sufficiently. I almost think its for setting an example. Its fuging garbage. Between this and resigning Bell, im starting to lose faith in Dave. If we couldve let hardy walk, and this meant keeping smitty and upgrading the line and drafting a receiver, that would've been more beneficial. Would cutting dwill or stewart at this point not actually free up more room than letting smith go? I hope he does go play for brady and get a damn ring. This organization deserves it for letting him go.
