Panthers attempting to trade Steve Smith.

Not really. Steve has done a lot for the community and is great with kids.

You either have never met and talked to him....or don't know people who know him.  Because you are wrong.  He is not the sweet likable peson that you want to think he is.

See Joe Montana and Jerry Rice and where they ended up and how they left San Fran....

And let's face it Steve Smith is no Joe Montana or Jerry Rice.

That's a great comparison.  San Fran had Steve Young to step in so they traded Montana.  They also had Terrell Owens to step in when they got rid of Jerry Rice.

We can get rid of Smitty because we have....uhhhh.......??

Traded for olsen...

And signed Jeremey Shockey, and Cam had one of the best rookie seasons for a quarterback ever. What did we do? Let Shockey walk. It's been frustrating. Frankly if we are going to treat our only WR under contract like this, we should have gone ahead and extended Cam.

I've met and talked to Steve on more than one occasion, and none of them were meet-and-greet-type things.

He's got a chip on his shoulder, and he's very moody. I know he's been an asshole before, for sure. But everyone has. Fact is, he's been the heart and soul of this franchise since 2001. But about him as a guy, there's the moody Steve and the great-with-kids, good-to-the-community Steve.

All of this.

I can tolerate it if its best for both parties. If EightNine has to leave then so be it, but. . .

the comments that amount to "good! bye Smitty! fugging old has been! fugging money waste!" . . those make me sick to my stomach because of all the justice 89 doled out for us as Panther fans. No one Panther has stood up for this team more than Steve Smith. No Panther has rang the bell like that dude when we needed it most.

I will prepare myself for Cam to be that guy now without Smith if thats the way it needs to go, but every year Im so disappointed in how naive some Panthers fans can be about rookies and other team's unwanteds replacing a Panther's legend.

While what you're saying is true you have to look at the context of that reply. It was to a comment about how the Panthers' GOAT shouldn't go down like this.

Jerry Rice was voted as the #1 Football player not WR but Football player of all time and he was sent packing at the end.

And the I-am-too-old-to-match-my-production-with-my-contract Steve...

Which is why you, and the rest of you folks on the ledge need to either jump off or realize he could either take a pay cut or GTFO. That simple.

Gettleman has done a great job with this team. We received key contributions from all the one-year FA deals like the one for Mitchell, Florence, Ginn, and Hixon (although it was only one big catch). Even the draft was good, with both Star and Short providing good value, and I think Klein will start over Blackburn this year.

I would be happy with Godfrey getting cut and using that money to keep Mitchell. I think Lester showed improvement throughout the season and can be a fairly reliable safety in year 2.

    • Hope Koch recovers (he’s stated numerous times he doesn’t like to be called “koochie”) soon. But he does not instill confidence in the crease. I don’t have any confidence in any of our goalies, healthy or not. Andersen when available gives us the best chance to win but he’s never available.    Team has to explore trade options soon.
    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
