Hakeem Nicks: "I can see myself catching passes from Cam Newton" (among others)

Don't like the "I want a long term deal" part. We can't afford a long term deal.

Most long term deals are more cap friendly in the first few years than a short term deal is. The question us not being able to afford a longer desk, but whether Nicks is worth a long deal after last season's performance.

Why would you wana throw out a longterm contract for nicks or rice? Both injury prone and both risky, only way id offer them a longer deal than say a one year prove it deal is to put in a 'void of the contract clause' during seasons 2-3, that way if it doesn't work out you cut your losses early rather than play out five years of crap.

If Nicks signs a long term deal he'll want big money (atleast $8M/year) but if he signs a 1 year deal it will certainly be a 'cheapish prove-it' deal to get a long term deal the next year if he can't get it this year. He'a in it for the money and we could afford a reasonable long term deal, we won't afford what he wants. His signing with jay-z as an agent says it all.

Tbh I don't care I think LT is far more of an issue than signing Hakeem Nicks

they're equally important obviously. No need in even doing that if you're gone be throwing to the same exact wr core anyway. Not gonna make much of a difference. Don't think there's a fan that doesn't expect both issues to be adressed tho

Disagree on equal positions of priority! If you don't protect the qb he isn't going to throw the ball so no point in having nicks or whoever outhere catching, LT is second most important position on the team after qb, the line was bad enough then you lose your all pro veteran LT it and you decide to address DE instead of that it's worrying.

like I said ...they will both be adressed so what exactly is the prob? It may not happen in the order you would like but I expect Gettleman to make sure Cam is well protected while throwing to a couple of new receivers next season

My problem is all the top FA LT guys seem to be gone, you don't put a rookie or an average guy at LT not to protect your franchise qb, I'm suprised we didn't make a move thats all, receivers are easily found compared to pro bowl type LT, I think when you see a guy try's to replace Jordan gross you will see what the problem is when cam gets blown up

Valid points.

But, the $8M per season contract can be structured so that this season is only a $3-4M cap hit.  The biggest issue with Nicks is that he did have a very off season.  Therefore, I think the uncertainty and risk is the bigger issue with a short vs long term deal.

Agreed. I mentioned somewhere else that if we signed Nicks to a longterm deal right out of the gate it could end up one of two ways: He plays to his potential, stays healthy, and is a key piece in our offense and a great signing OR his injuries linger and he plays poorly and we've got another Hurney-like deal on our hands (though it likely wouldn't be as bad as his). I'd love a 1 year deal somewhere around/under $5million. But I'd also like James Jones as some others have said. Regardless, I think in the draft we need to go WR in either the 1st or 2nd. Too much talent and depth in this class to miss out on.

I definitely think a WR in rounds 1 or 2 should be targeted.

it seems like you think you're the only one who feels this way. I don't know how else to put it tho *re-reads last reply*
