I know that, I'm just thinking that Gettleman may have thought they were close to a long-term deal, but as soon as the franchise tag came out, Hardy and his team pretty much said, "Thanks for the $13.1M buddy, talk to ya next year!"

ah gotcha, i dunno.

hardy is crazy but he would be an absolute idiot to not try and work out a long-term deal. more guaranteed money and the nfl being such a violent sport and all.

who knows though.

Gettleman knew what he was inheriting and he chose to completely cap strap us by putting the franchise tag on Hardy for a $13.1M cap hit.  I think he misread the situation.  I think he thought they were close to a deal, that the tag would protect us from having him walk, then the deal could be finalized.  What he wasn't prepared for was for Hardy to be completely willing to play under the tag.  Wouldn't surprise me a bit if Hardy and his agent have simply called off negotiations and are completely willing to take $13.1M this season and have another go at free agency next year.  If so, damn if G-man didn't get played like a fiddle.

Sure, he knew what he was inheriting, but that still doesn't make the problems go away, its why he is having to make these tough decisions and work with scraps in FA. I think sometimes it's us that forget that when he makes these decisions. I don't believe he is trying to send messages, be a ball-buster or be disrespectful. I honestly think he is trying to fix things as best he can while keeping the future of the team in mind.

I think Gman knew what he was getting into when he tagged Hardy. I think he was well prepared to make the decisions he has made. Its we as fans that are getting carried away by the release of Smitty and not signing Nicks. Admittedly, today, it doesn't look great on paper. We'll see what we have before draft day soon enough.

Keeping Hardy for 13.1 doesn't seem so bad when you look around and see what Ware and Pep got, but I hope you aren't right about Hardy not wanting to sign long term. That really wouldn't be good news.

He signed 3 role players last year for 3 mill that just cashed in for 50 mill, I think he might be smarter than we think he is at this moment.

I disagree with the idea that Hardy and his agent are going to sit on the tag this year and try to negotiate some insane deal next year.  If anything, I think the incentive to sign should be higest now while his perceived value is greatest.

So Pep and Ware got $10 million a year for guys over 30.  Those are effectively 1 year deals.  Hardy (and his agent) can get $30ish million in guaranteed money by signing before the deadline (June 15?).  If Hardy banks on himself, what happens if he starts slow, gets banged up (ankle or knees or both!), and his replacements (Horton/Alexander/Addison) play well in his place.  Suddenly his 2015 value is considerably less than it is now.  Hardy's had a couple of good years back to back, and he's shown steady improvement since he was a rookie, but he's got to strike while the iron is hot.  There's too big of a risk to not sign and get that guaranteed money.

Also, to someone else who stated Hardy's tag is crippling us, it's not that, it's the future money tied into the Hurney contracts (how we love to hear about those).  The fact is, there is a lot of future dead money thanks to restructures and guys not here.  It sucks, Gettleman knew it as soon as he opened the books here.  That's also why he's said several times, we're cap strapped.  We have Cam coming up, Luke, then Star.  I love having great draft choices, but you've got to pay up under the new CBA.  Those three are going to eat major parts of our cap.  To get them, and keep the rest of the team competitive, we have to do some more value shopping this year, and probably next year.  I think with Cam and Luke, and our DLine we'll be very competitive, even with an average at best LT (being hopeful here for those summer cuts...).

Would you rather be Oakland, Jacksonville, or Cleveland with cap room but missing many many pieces and under bad ownership, with questionable GM's and coaches? Be thankful for what we've got, because we went 12-4 and were 1 of only 8 teams to have advanced to the divisional round of the playoffs, have a clear franchise QB (along with the centerpiece of our defense in Kuechly), seemingly great HC and GM, and fantastic ownership.

I rather be this team,  If you look at all the other teams, you'll see they didn't even succeed as well.  We played well and still have a good team, Our defense is set, all we need is LT, RT, and few WR's..  Couldn't complain about a veteran CB either..

I'm just speculating regarding Hardy.  I agree that it makes sense for him to do a deal now, but Hardy is just a different kind of cat.  Who knows what's going through that guy's head.  He may legitimately think he's going to get 30 sacks next season.

Hardy's tag is part of our salary cap problem right now.  There's no way around that.  The dead money is what it is.  It's easy to blame everything on the last guy, but no one or two or three guys kill your cap by themselves.  It's a big picture kind of thing and that $13.1M is definitely part of that big picture.

That was a move for next year when we release Johnson and his mega contract. Even if we let Hardy walk we would have not had enough money to sign our stop gaps from last year, they collectively received 50 million. Also while last year teams had there purses closed and that was our advantage this year they opened them up big time.

We tagged him this year for next year?  As it stands right now, Hardy will be a FA again next year.  When we tagged him, I assumed a long-term deal would follow shortly thereafter.  There's still plenty of time to get a long-term deal done before the July deadline, but I thought it would've gotten hammered out in time to give us some flexibility in FA.
