Mitchell, Ginn may hit the market

Think about our WR corps last year:

1.  A short, #1 WR who has lost a step, but was getting by on his savvy and determination.

2. A WR that has small hands and cannot get open out of the break (most Lafell success was when he found pockets in zone coverage--some teams realized that and manned him up/shut him down.  WFNZ said there were 40 targets to him that went inc or int).

3. A speedy KR who cannot run the entire route tree. A dynamic kick returner, a fair WR with inconsistent hands.  You just saw Ginn's best year in recent history.

To me, the prospect of upgrading WR is exciting.  I would LOVE to move Smitty inside for a year or two and build him a statue.  Ginn will get more $$ than he deserves--I say, let him go.

I really want Mitchell back because it could mean Godfrey returns.  But Mitchell was not as sound at the position as most people here think.  I personally think we need a QB-type FS. I saw a lot of mistakes in the secondary that suggests they needed leadership.  (Buffalo-blown coverage to lose game; SF-blown coverage to allow Boldin to beat us in playoffs, for example).  Not that this was all Mitchell's fault, but I did not see him (bear in mind that TV is not the way to assess def. backs) leading from the rear a lot.  I saw Kalil doing it, I saw Cam doing it, I saw Luke doing it.  The DBs are going to be very young, so we need a qb at S, if you ask me.  No knock on Mitchell, he was a new player at a new position.

in all my yrs of being a panther fan I had NEVER been impressed by our kick return game. That was until last yr! I think it would absolutely suck to lose Ginn. Mainly b/c we had tried so many times to find we he brought to the table & failed. The back end of our defense was arguably the weakest part of our game overall so I can't say I would be that upset to lose any of those guys. Although I do love Mitchell's fiery presence & he may have been the most consistent. Wish we could Keep them both but if I had to choose....hell idk! I'm torn

Mitchell could hurt but he was more of a surprised than he was legitimately great in my view. Love his attitude but he was weak in pass protection which was exposed at times. He's a guy we are hopefully trying to bring back but we absolutely cannot afford to overpay him. I'm sure other teams will check him out and set a market - and it will be up to Gettleman to match/beat or find a replacement.

Ginn I'm not at all concerned about. I don't think he will generate a ton of interest and if he does our money is better spent elsewhere.

Actually, my main concern in letting Mitchell go is then needing to draft a safety in the first round. With the holes we have at WR and CB, and the elite talent we could grab with that pick into is draft, it's hard to see more holes being created in the roster. I like Pryor but am a much bigger fan of Benjamin, Verrett, Cooks, and some others.

As the start of full fledged free agency draws near, Joe Person expects Panther free agents Mike Mitchell and Ted Ginn to hit the open market.

Person says the prospects of their re-signing before Tuesday are 'not looking good'.

Let them see their real value, before throwing money at them.

Smart.

i'll be most upset if mitchell isn't brought back. simply because i think the guy was about to turn the corner under Rivera.

He played lights out last year, he was given the ultimate responsibility of the secondary and he flourished. We could see another jump from him this year in the same system.

BUT if he didn't have all those drops deep he'd have had like 1,000 yards and 10 tds and maybe defenses would respect him more in their schemes.

The guy had one bad drop, he had less drops then smitty and lafell and made clutch catches to make up for them.. Not to mention he gave us good field position every posession.

who Ginn? Only person who had less drops than Smitty was Olsen. Lafell & Ginn were the main deep threat tho

Other than Hardy and Gross, Mitchell was the player that was crucial we re-signed. That being said, this means Godfrey will not be cut and be our starting FS. I don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing.

The dude was arguably our best receiver last year... Did you even watch? His deep threat was underutilized because he dropped a dozen deep bombs that Cam fired into his bread basket.

Fixed for accuracy.

The guy had one bad drop,

No need to read further, since that is a lie.

I loved that Ginn improved his game with the Panthers. But he wasn't consistent with the deep receptions.

He was more money on the short and intermediate passes.

Go figure.

That being said, I'd like to see Ginn back for the right price.
