Mitchell, Ginn may hit the market

Mr. Scot

The problem with getting money by cutting players is that Godfrey would be a June 1st, so no point in doing it now. The only moves really left are restructures to Olsen, and CJ.

At most the Panthers would be able to free 7-8 million and get to14 million in room before June 1st.

There just isn't enough money for anyone outside of a LT and draft picks till June 1st, and that's only if they cut Godfrey.

As for secondary, think maybe one pick around round 3 then some low level FA and UDFA to fill out the rest.

At what point do we have to be under the cap?  Is it a running tab or can it be by the start  of the season? Or is it the end of the '14 season?  I ask because if we know we're going to make moves on June 1, why not still make the other FA moves now even though we'll be over, if we have in our mind that certain salaries will come off the books on June 1.

what's he supposed to do? overpay to keep guys here?

he's got to see what the market is like before he does anything. if someone is willing to pay more than we can afford without handivapping ourselves further, then let them.

i don't want to see mitchell go, but he's replaceable. the same guy that found him can find someone else to take his place.

he can't afford to run this team on sentiment. he's forced to think about the bottom line.

i maybe crazy for thinking this, i think mitchell continues to improve at the free safety position.

the dude was in oakland, OAKLAND.

his intanglibles and tangibles are off the charts. ran a sub 4.4 40 at the combine, hits like a mack truck, is football smart and always willing to learn, and hes only 25 or 26. Who is available to replace him that you would think would be as serviceable, and at times a game changer?

I keep hearing this replaceable word getting thrown around. I think people tend to forget this was his first year in this system, his first year starting at the free safety position. I really, really think we found a gem we need to hold onto for a couple years.

and fwiw, i listed mitchell as one of our core players we needed to keep back when the season first ended.

i still feel that way.

i agree about the intangibles and that he'll get better, but he is replaceable. i hate that he may have to be replaced because he's more expensive than we can afford, but still the guy responsible for finding him and landing him is still here and just getting started. i trust gentleman's ability to find hidden gems and get them here. i would love for mitchell to be part of the core going forward, but teams in our cap situation can't afford to have too big of a core.

until we get rid of hurney's bad contracts, i think we're going to see this type thing happen fairly often. gettleman spots underutilized or underachieving players and brings them in and then after a year of playing to their ability become too expensive for us. i think the upside of this is that we are going to get a good reputation among the players as a good spot to prove yourself Nd earn a bigger contract somewhere. that's not a bad rep to have, imo. we'd be a team that players actually want to come and play for rather than a place to come when you're desperate for a job and you've got nowhere else to go.

it sucks. but what's really alarming are the reports coming out saying mitchell isn't a "priority." i still had faith that he would come back, he desperately wants to come back but not after this.

i know it's Person but if thats how the front office feels then damn. maybe i'm completely wrong about him. Maybe the value isn't there and honestly good for him for coming here making a name for himself and cashing in. its just a toss-up because once again we will go back to be uncertain about our last line of defense. I honestly felt safe ad comfortable with mitchell being back there. with godfrey i was scared all the fuging time. it's just gonna be another void once again. i trust DG's eye but damn when you find a gem like Mitchell it sucks to have him leave after one awesome year

This.

This is how elite franchises stay elite. You keep the elite players that you know are elite and you fill in the gaps with serviceable guys who are coming in to prove themselves, improve their stock and want to be a part of a winning team.

Eventually, we'll be able to get these one and done FA's signed to multiple-year deals instead, and if they improve their stock enough mid-contract, trading them for draft picks or draft positioning becomes a possibility instead of overpaying or just losing them outright. Buy low and sell high.

That's how dynasty's are built and maintained.

Maybe the FO has other players in mind to fill his spot. Maybe they already tried to get a deal done and his asking price just wasn't feasible and they knew they'd be moving on.

Mitchell had a very good year for us and if he was re-signable at a reasonable price, then he would be a priority, no doubt about it. The FO is not blind to positions of need nor the performances of the players within the system. If they covet him, they'll make a counter-offer once his market-value is established.

How do y'all know that Mitchell's agent didn't say "we want to test the market and based upon all offers, we will make a decision on which teams we are willing to negotiate with," regardless of whether an offer was already given by the Panthers or not?

These people who want to retain everyone, sign all the top FAs, and expand the cap space are literally delusional.

Doesn't matter, safeties still play a little deeper and allow the underneaths to open up

Until he gets completely past the safety and still drops a sure TD catch.  Hard to overcome when you dont capitallize on opportunities in this league

Sadly, theres a reason he never played in San Fran.  They have starting caliber receivers
