first 5 seasons:

Smith- 70 Games 306 Rec 4,498 Yd 28 Td

Nicks- 74 Games 339 Rec 5,056 Yd 31 Td

last 5 seasons:

Smith- 77 Games 331 Rec 4,923 Yd 25 Td

Nicks- 74 Games 339 Rec 5,056 Yd 31 Td

...the more you know

Now, lets compare the rest of the talent Nicks had vs Smitty.....then Smitty getting #1 corners, while Nicks wasn't....more to it than just numbers. I have seen a ton of doubles on Smitty in that time span. Still think Smitty would excel in the slot...tho.

Guy's I know this isnt a popular idea becuase of the legend status of Steve Smith, but Smith is done as a #1 and he's getting payed #1 money, we need some new help at WR terribly bad, yeah you might not like it, but it may be better for the Panthers to Cut Smith and go with another reciver for the money we are paying him currently.

I'm not talking about the smith from 5-7 years ago to which I'd agree would be crazy talk, we are talking about the Smith of today and it's not that crazy.

Do not ever post again

Steve Smith missed basically his entire fourth season.

If you are going to make such a comparison for their early careers, at least include all the numbers.

Steve Smith first 5 played seasons, including only one game from 2004 where he had 6 receptions for 60 yards.

77 games - 344 receptions - 4,925 yards - 30 touchdowns.

Also, I'm not sure where you got those numbers for Nicks either, but NFL.com says otherwise.

Nicks first 5 seasons:

70 games - 311 receptions - 4,622 yards - 27 touchdowns.

Prime Steve Smith 2005-2009

74 games 416 Rec 6134 yds 40 TDs

Love me some Nicks but come on now. He will likely never have the career Smith has had. And you basically compared them with Smith decline vs. Nick's rise. Not mention to Smith sitting out in 04 and not getting much of a chance in 01.  Those are still good numbers though which is why I want Nicks but I want us to draft a WR too.

Smith was also mainly a return guy his first year and nicks played right away.

Cam would be thrilled with Nicks

A lazy overrated receiver that can't catch balls or score TDs and disappeared in a contract year and that his current team is basically running out of town and wants to be paid like he has skills? I'm sure he'll be thrilled. Might as well just give lafell a raise instead.

Numbers never lie. Unless you fudge on them.

Smitty may not be a #1 anymore, but he is still a viable option. Add in the intangibles, and he is still worth having around. But...we need to do something about his cap hit. Otherwise it limits what we can do for the rest of the team.

Just because Smitty isn't a true #1 does not mean he cannot help us. He is not going to fall off the map this year. He has shown he still can contribute. I know that is not a popular position. But hey, it's the truth.

This is not the year to let Smitty go. Redo his contract to keep him here. We are still going to need him. Even if we bring in any FA WR, or draft some. We are still going to need Smitty.

Fix that stupid contract and let the guy play. We can worry about letting him go next year, or even the year after. He still has value for this franchise.
