Assuming Smith goes, I think Hakeem Nicks is the obvious choice... James Jones is a good option (he led the league in touchdown catches in 2012) to replace LaFell. I'd also want to re-sign Ted Ginn, but if that fails we should pursue Devin Hester (purely as a return guy).

I've wanted Hakeem Nicks on this team ever since watching him back in 2011. But w/ our $$ situation I see the only way we get him is if he absolutely cares nothing about the check & wants to play nowhere else but home lol. In other words the chances are pretty damn slim. But no one on this list replaces Smith. Even if we grab any one of them he still remains on the roster

The "prove it deal" for Hakeem Nicks has gone past being a fairy tale at this point. It isn't going to happen.

 

Not when a guy like Riley Cooper can get $25 million without even having a 1,000 yard season.

I don't think Lafell should be ahead of Ginn on that ranking.....both drop their fair share of balls but Ginn so much more explosive, and a greater threat. But i digress......

Oh, I absolutely agree. Unfortunately, contracts like that ruin the market for everyone else.

 

I think ultimately the draft is where we will be looking.

Who can we realistically afford that is a definitive upgrade over what we already have/had?

 

Britt? That's a whole bag of character concerns, bundled complete with suspension risks and injury risks. 

 

The only one that I still think that we may be able to afford and definitely be an asset long term is Sidney Rice who is also an injury risk.

 

And either one may be out of reach after all is said and done. I would think that acquiring a left tackle would be the priority.

only 10 million of that 25 is guaranteed, though I'm not really sure how that guaranteed vs non guaranteed $$ stuff works

Big question if that Nicks would be willing to sign a one year prove it deal. 

 I read where the Pats may be interested in bringing him in. They must not realize what a bust he is. Probably not regulars on this board.
