Someone help me out here. Make me understand the real benefit of playing hardball with Smitty. What?

Unless you think that Smitty is just plain ol' washed up and has outlived his usefulness, what is the practical benefit here? Play nice and ask the man to take a pay cut for the good of the team. If he doesn't, then grin and bare it (and "get" him next year if that's what you want to do). fug, man!

More than money. Part of it though.

89 always brings his unique baggage to the table. That is part of it too. This is a new team and era.....gotta move on. He is basically all that is left of the old era.

Does he limit Cam, Luke, etc? From them growing and taking control of the team? Is his limiting them worth his positive? All that matters with his cost.

And I just responded to another of your posts.  But note that the difference is that I am not trying to act as if there is a problem or giving some random opinion of how screwed we are or how dumb the move is.  I just try to give some voice of reason here.

Would you prefer that or some more "what are we going to do" type posts?

Don't take it the wrong way...I was just giving you a hard time.

I consider you to be one of the best informed and well thought out posters on this board.  I always enjoy reading your opinion and perspective.

Was just making light of that one statement that you made.

Why not look at the other 20 threads about Smitty.  I think folks have made it clear that this isn't hardball.  HIs contract was designed to be restructured this year.  If he is gone it is because he won't restructure or won't accept a different role.  How many times do we need to revisit the same old topic. Gettleman doesn't have the emotional attachment you do.  He sees a old guy who is diminishing in capacity who is costing the team 7 million in cap this year rising to 12 million in cap in 2016 if we pay him the option that is due in a few months.  If you take the emotions out, he just isn't worth it.

And I was just pulling your chain as well.  You know I like talking junk with you particularly at a tailgate over a few beers.  Really sorry I missed the tailgates this year.  I hope we do something next year.

Yeah, that's a legit argument. But from most accounts he is still a hard working leader on and off the field. It wasn't too far back that Rivera, G-man and others were very complimentary of Steve's leadership and work ethic.

perhaps it's all just one big smokescreen in one way or another.

The way I understand it is that Smith has a 7 mil cap figure. His actual salary is 4 mil however. So in fiscal terms we can make 3 mil by cutting him. But, we still have to pay his replacement. Now unless we're going to rely on mostly rookies, other unproven guys (e.g., McNutt and King), or just some also-rans, we're going to have to pay someone a decent salary.  Let's say we do sign a guy like James Jones and pay him the 2.95 mil that he made last year, then we're probably gonna lose any benefit that we may have gained because Smitty is probably worth the .05 mil.

In essence, it's bare your ass and go all-in with noobs, or risk losing a hard working leader for minimal gain at best.  In my opinion it makes the Smitty situation appear even worse (i.e., G-man is not giving off a good look).

according to what i read the gain would be about a mil at best, but your conclusion i think is dead on.I think the smartest move is go into next season right where we are at with SS and then make this call after the season depending on where we stand and where he stands according to his performance. With all the stuff stirred up and Smith riled up this is a year I want him on the team.Talk about a "prove it season" , that is the x factor in all this, the will and determination of SS to prove everyone wrong ...again!

There you go.

Basically, if you think the thread is a waste of time, then get out of it.  A simple solution that is so overlooked. See posts 23, especially 27 and 34.

Why get out of it when I can post about how ridiculous this thread is with your sky is falling type of logic. I have just as much right to give my opinion as you do.  If you are going to make threads like this then expect folks like to me to respond.  If you don't want this kind of feedback why not make more well thought threads than the same tired threads over and over.

Sure you can, we've been doing it since Hurney left the building. Not everyone gets paid equally, that's a fact of life.

Ok you let your boss come to you and tell you that you're going to take a pay cut so that he can give your coworker a raise. Especially if you work just as hard, if not harder than that individual.
