OH MY GAWD.   THE SKY IS FALLING!!!!

Why does everyone worry about this as if you personally have to find the cap space. And why ask here as if anyone has a clue what we going to do.

Sure it is a message board but that is like saying I have a cough and these symptoms and asking on here what medication to take. Do you really think you are going to get a cogent argument about what you should or could do?  Like SCP said in another thread these kind of threads are a huge waste of time.

The way I understand it is that Smith has a 7 mil cap figure. His actual salary is 4 mil however. So in fiscal terms we can make 3 mil by cutting him. But, we still have to pay his replacement. Now unless we're going to rely on mostly rookies, other unproven guys (e.g., McNutt and King), or just some also-rans, we're going to have to pay someone a decent salary.  Let's say we do sign a guy like James Jones and pay him the 2.95 mil that he made last year, then we're probably gonna lose any benefit that we may have gained because Smitty is probably worth the .05 mil.

In essence, it's bare your ass and go all-in with noobs, or risk losing a hard working leader for minimal gain at best.  In my opinion it makes the Smitty situation appear even worse (i.e., G-man is not giving off a good look).

Someone help me out here. Make me understand the real benefit of playing hardball with Smitty.  What?

Unless you think that Smitty is just plain ol' washed up and has outlived his usefulness, what is the practical benefit here? Play nice and ask the man to take a pay cut for the good of the team. If he doesn't, then grin and bare it (and "get" him next year if that's what you want to do). fug, man!

Yes this is correct....which is why tagging Hardy (if we can't get a long term deal done) was an astronomically stupid move.  Renting him for a year at $13M with the other needs in this organization will prove to be painful.

Not necessarily.  We could gain tons of cap space in other areas but like I just posted who knows what Gettleman has lined up.

But you can surely assume that Gettleman had a long range plan when he franchised him.  He is clearly not stupid and planned for this more than a month ago.  Most times you only announce other cuts or restructures when you are on the verge of signing a new player and know how much money you need to free up.

Besides renting him means he is still in a contract year and will give us his best.  We can see if he can do it again before we pay him long term and have no guaranteed money tied up if we don't want him long term.

The team did the same thing with Beason and Delomme. Granted they had options at MLB but the QB thing sucked all around. Paying a player that is no longer on the team is just part of the process. It's true that it does nothing for the cap and that's not the single reason he's being evaluated. It's about future money for an aging receiver verses what the teams thinks they can do to improve the position. If Hurney wwere still calling the shot's then I would agree that there would be no choice but to keep Steve and pray that blind luck would drop a replacement in our laps. With the Godfather now in charge I'm confident that he will at least find a couple of players to compensate for Steve.

Well so far history is not on the side of finding players to compensate for SS.I don't offer the keeping SS scenario as waiting on blind luck. if it were another player of less fight and beating the odds then sure  and even then I would have a hard time "paying a player who is no longer on the team." You don't gain in anyway by doing that.

Just giving you a hard time and found it amusing.

And I just responded to another of your posts.  But note that the difference is that I am not trying to act as if there is a problem or giving some random opinion of how screwed we are or how dumb the move is.  I just try to give some voice of reason here.

Would you prefer that or some more "what are we going to do" type posts?

There you go.

Basically, if you think the thread is a waste of time, then get out of it.  A simple solution that is so overlooked. See posts 23, especially 27 and 34.

Something to help put the cap into perspective (note: these calculations have the cap at $7,263,215)

In cap, you only count the top 51 cap hits. Right now at the bottom of the list is FB Michael Zordich with a cap hit of 421k. As we add players like Derek Anderson back to the roster (assuming), he'll only count 570k towards the cap (he'll get paid 855k but we get the minimum salary benefit that takes 285k off his cap hit).

When you add Derek to the roster for 570k, it kicks Michael Zordich's 421k salary out of the top 51. Signing Derek adds a SMALL cap hit of 149k. Colin Cole, Garry Williams, Chris Scott, Ben Hartsock, Jordan Senn, Richie Brockel, Jeff Byers, James Dockery, Jason Williams could all fall into this category of the minimum salary benefit (not a sure thing, but you get the point).

The point i'm trying to make is that as we add contracts we also gain money.

Same goes for the draft. As we add 7 new contracts, we no longer count the 7 bottom contracts they would replace (6 and 7 round might be the 52nd and 53rd contract, but the $ diff is tiny). The money needed for the 7 drafted players is 4.457M (OTC proj.). Money gained as the 7 bottom contracts fall out of top 51 is 3.055M. That means we only need 1.402M in new cap space to sign this year's draft.

You really can't say if we sign someone to a $1M contract, we lost $1M in cap. Just keep that in mind.

It appears there was a large amount of dead money not previously accounted for in many people's original cap space projections.

If we get past this season we are good to go!

1.The top dead money contracts for this season will fall off the books freeing up 18 million (although several million more in dead money will be created, we should still gain about 10 mil)

2. The cap will rise another 5-10 mil

3. We will dump quite a few players who are hurting our cap. (Either J-stew, D-will or both)

Below are the top dead money contracts counting against us this year, per Spotrac

Jon Beason OLB,LB 8,000,000

  Jordan Gross LT,T 5,600,000

James Anderson OLB,LB 2,800,000

Geoff Hangartner G 666,668

Haruki Nakamura S 365,833

Joe Adams WR 233,776

Sione Fua DT 126,504

Keep in mind we will do something with Godfrey's contract this year as well. An outright cut frees up about 2 mil, while a June 1st cut frees up almost 5 mil.

A paycut will most likely happen, saving us 2-3 mil.

year     base            signing        misc             cap              dead

2014 5,000,000 1,000,000 1,100,000 7,100,000 5,000,000

2015 5,000,000 1,000,000 1,100,000 7,100,000 3,000,000

2016 5,300,000 - 1,100,000 6,400,000 1,000,000

We will absolutely do something with CJ's contract this year or next as I don't see us paying out that type of cap hit for the next two years. Look for an extension that benefits CJ.

Year     Base            Signing        Misc          Cap hit          Dead

2014 8,750,000 7,420,000 250,000 16,420,000 16,260,000

2015 9,750,000 7,420,000 250,000 17,420,000 6,000,000

2016 10,750,000 1,420,000 250,000 12,420,000

Now about Steve Smith.....

He will absolutely be here this year, no doubt about it. If he's gone, it won't be for cap reasons.

(2016 is a player option I don't believe he will take) If you look at his salary for 2014 you will see we lose 2 mil by outright cutting him.

A June 1st cut would save us 2.5 ml this year, but carry over 4.5 mil in dead money next year. Also, while we'd be saving that 2.5 mil we would have to replace him with a FA WR who doesn't even know our system and costs maybe a million less at most. It won't happen.

Year     Base            Signing      Misc             Cap hit          Dead

2014 4,000,000 2,000,000 1,000,000 7,000,000 9,000,000

2015 7,000,000 2,000,000 1,000,000 10,000,000 6,000,000

2016 9,000,000 2,000,000 1,000,000 12,000,000 3,000,000

My theory behind the whole "Gettleman blunder" is that it wasn't a blunder at all. Steve has said numerous times there is no way he'd take a paycut on this contract and I think Gettleman was bringing him back to reality with his public comments. Steve will take a paycut this year or next and if he doesnt, he won't be in a Panther's uniform come 2015.

We will be fine, this year will be like last, were we don't sign any big names. Next year is when it will really get fun....
