Cosmos: a space time Odyssey

Finally got to see it tonight and now more than ever I firmly believe that we lost out by never putting Sagan in complete control of NASA and that mistake will be compounded if we don't give that job to Tyson.

He manages to inspire in the same way that Carl did.  With a passion not just for the science itself but an equal passion for sharing it in a way that doesn't alienate the viewer.

Really jacked up to watch the rest of these.

Back in 2000-2001, my dad said that if Sagan had been in charge of NASA, "I'm 99% sure we'd have a base on the Moon, & 55-60% sure we would've set foot on Mars by now."

I loved the show and it's ambition. I just hope it gets through to the people that really need it to widen their world perspective.

Well, a mantra of education is "if you reach 1, it's a victory". So, going on that and the ratings for the first episode, I'd say it would have to at least get through to 1/4 of the viewership, which is a pretty big deal. The US has a largely scientifically illiterate culture, so to get over 10 million viewers, only a small portion of that were already knowledgeable of the content beforehand. Which means that the vast majority watching didn't really grasp the concepts beforehand, which means that I think we can assume some perspectives were widened.

The show can only build from here. It laid a good, broad foundation. I hope it explores these things more in-depth over the course of the series. It's cool to give the awesome visuals and flowery, grasping language to go with it, but you have to give some actual science education. Not too much as to bore the average viewer, but enough to make people go "hey, I learned something here".

Finally got to watch the most recent episode about evolution. It was pretty good. They do a good job of explaining a complex topic to the average uneducated viewer. My 7 year old son watched it and seemed to grasp most of the concepts.

Creationists are demanding equal time....

Yep

The ID guys at the Discovery Institute wrote a long "take" down of episode two on evolution. However as always, they mis- quote real evolutionary biologist and take their quotes way out of context., Sadly to the average person they'd never pick up on it or look in to the rest of the quote given by the biologist.

If i find it again I'll post it, and then post the take down of the take down.

I've really given Intelligent Design a far shake however when I researched their claims I found they were either flat out lying, giving half truths and taking down straw man.  They lost all respect because they don't seek truth, they seek proving their themselves right.

I love this show, and I would love to see Halley's comet if I'm alive in 2061.  Though if you're a religious person as I am, you got to feel like the dumbest person in the world when watching hehe!  Yet I know that is not the angle of the show, and my thoughts concerning my belief and science are very different than most.  I'm not of the God of the gaps theory but of the God who fills the gaps.  My question is (as the premise of the show is question everything), "How did God do it"?

You're doing the very thing the show is warning against. You're going in with a presupposition that god did it to begin with. You're closing off all possibilities that don't involve your god/warping everything to where your god fits, and then looking for evidence to fit that confirmation bias you have.

God of the gaps, god who fills the gaps, it's the same thing. There's a gap in knowledge, you insert god.
