Anybody would have problems managing our cap situation because these contracts are so difficult to get rid of

Yes, yes he does.  You know how I know?  Because Gross actually said he did.  He said that he didn't like him at first, but then he took the time to get to know him, and his opinion changed, that he now likes him.

And lets be accurate here, nobody on the team (not Jordan Gross, not Steve Smith, no one) has talked about not liking Gettleman on a personal level.  The reason Gross didn't like him is because Gettleman asked him to give back money.  Same with Smitty.  It's not that they actually have a problem with Dave Gettleman the person, they just don't like that he's doing things they don't like and are not used to...and the fact that it is all they had to go on.

They're used to being handled with kid gloves, and now they are dealing with culture shock.  Hurney's way of doing business was counter to the way things are typically done in the NFL...particularly on the better teams.  He was so focused on building a family atmosphere and loyalty that he often struggled to make the tough decisions.  But all good GM's know you sometimes have to make those tough decisions...even if it is unpopular with the fan base.

So you speak not just for gross and Smith, but the whole team? They have all told you how they feel about Gettleman?

My God, don't be so absurd.  You know exactly what I said and meant.  However, since it seems I need to spell it out for you, it was obvious that I was referring to the public comments the players have made.  But don't let the truth get in the way of a great agenda.

Also you guys got to remember, its only our big name players who didn't like G-man up (the guys he was asking to restructure and take flat pay cuts).  Just because Dave doesn't want to blow all the teams cap on a couple of above average players doesn't make him some cheap prick.  The money is simply going to be spread a little less top-sided throughout the roster, thats all.  The goal is for everyone to be taken care of, everyone to be a winner and everyone to be happy.

Ultimately it is what makes sense.  We won't end up like the Falcons where one injury will completely decimate the team (although if Cam goes down... but heck any team that has a good QB is in deep trouble if their QB goes down),  As the system goes on, the easier it is to maintain.  Players buy in, guys who like to win are happy, everyone is still getting a respectable check, pro bowl and playoff bonuses are being doled out left and right, we win superbowls.

As long as we continue to be successful, this plan will work.  Historically, the Steelers are the most successful franchise in the NFL (based on SB wins), they don't overpay players.  The Patriots have had a winning record every year for over a decade, they don't overpay players.  If you want sustained success (which is the best way to win a superbowl, as the playoffs are basically a roll of the dice every year) you need to have the business aspect of your team laid out.  Be honest with the players, weed out the money-only guys, make good critical decisions and you don't have limits.

excellent post........ and the bolded is the most important.

Be firm, lay it on the table and don't lie to anyone ..........

and you will be respected in this league and players will want to play for you.

Relax man, I'm just pointing out the obvious.

You make a grand sweeping statement of fact about the entire team based on a couple of quotes in the newspaper. You have no idea how the players feel about Gettleman but that didn't slow you down.

What is my agenda? What is the truth?
