The worst article ever published by the Charlotte Observer

so did they tell you this or not? lol I'm not reading between anybodies "lines". & the only excerpt that I read from an interview given by Hardy today referring to Smith must've been the only one they felt was important enough to announce. & it stated that losing him now would be detrimental to the team. What kind of idiot post is this.  Who said I was a reporter or in the locker room.  I just listen to those folks who have been or talked to team officials this week who said locker room issues with Smith were an issue.

Ok Einstein, if Smith is guaranteed his salary in 2014 and it costs us more to cut him than keep him, then why in the world would we talk about cutting him.  I don't know why I bother most days to even explain it to some of you.

I don't know why Tom Sorensen is so well respected. Everything he writes pisses me off. I never give him an internet hit or 2 dollars for a paper. He's a terrible human being and he sees us fans as mindless groundlings.

$2? is it a big paper? In Winston Salem the paper is 75 cents and it's 7 pages...

What a load of shyt.

Johnson, Williams, Stewart, Beason, etc. All these guys (OK not Delhomme) were in the prime of their careers, yes Hurney paid them too much and in badly structured deals.

Anyone who thinks Gettleman isn't going to bend over and spread his ass cheeks come contract time to get our current studs in their primes signed long term, mainly Cam Newton and Luke Kuechly have their heads in the sand. These guys will get paid market value.

Now Steve Smith is an entirely different situation as was Jordan Gross, both 10 year plus vets and have no similarity to those guys. The Panthers wanted Gross back, it was his decision to retire. The Panthers roster and budget can carry a Steve Smith, the last of Hurney's bloated contracts need to be the focus. Currently we're set to pay way too much to the RB and DE position. Right now 13 million of that is on Gettleman BTW.

The Panthers have a lot bigger problems than currently paying the best WR on the roster 7 million dollars in 2014.

It would help if you had your facts straight.  Smith is set to earn 4 million not 7 million which is his cap number.  3 million of his 4 million is already guaranteed so money is not the issue in 2014 since his dead cap space if we cut him would be 9 million.  It is more about what he is going to cost in cap hit and salary next year and in 2016 as well as the option which is due.

So if money isn't the thing than what could it be??  Why would locker room issues not be a concern?  What else would it be given we have to pay him anyway?"

in other words you have zero proof that the allegations are actually true?! Oh yeah...that's what I thought. OBVIOUSLY that was the point I was trying to make. & I have yet to mention anything about $$ in any of my post on here so why you're bringing that up to ME, idk. & don't touch on the fact that you were wrong a/b Hardy alluding to Smith being a locker room prob...it's cool

If he pisses you off then he is doing his job.  He writes opinion pieces which elicit people emotions.  Apparently he does it well.

Anyone who has followed this saga knows that Steve is very much a vocal leader in the locker room and overshadows guys like Cam who are less fiery and confrontational.  Plus Smith has been here since 2001 and Cam and everyone else came in deferring to Smith. It is hard to just take over especially when Cam was often considered aloof and distant in the locker room until this year.  The same thing happened with Jake who was canned partly because he overshadowed Moore and Moore couldn't be the leader as long as Jake was here.  Funny that the article mentioned the same thing,  Seems both Tom and myself who have followed the team since its inception know these things that folks like you don't have a clue about.

Clearly you have no idea how personalities function in the locker room in a competitive sports environment. And yes while I am not a great athlete I do know how this works and why you can't just switch leaders particularly when someone like Smith is not going to back down or easily assume a diminished role.

As for restructured contracts we are already obligated to pay him at least 3 million of the 4 million in salary that he is due in 2014. Getting rid of him now would cost us 9 million in dead cap space,  However next year his salary is 7 million and the year after 10 million if we exercise his option this year.  So cutting him this year makes no sense but cutting him next year is totally likely even probable.  He will only be here if he restructures to reduce his salaries for the next 2 years like Gross did.

Someone doesn't have a clue here and it isn't me.

All it is going to take is this season then all that speculation will be out the window they will want him to finish his contract and then he will ride off into the sunset. As far as the locker room thing, good thing I had my boots on, that was some load. Locker room, board room, break room it doesn't matter leaders lead.if Cam is a leader he will step up no matter who is in the locker room.

Moore couldn't be a leader because he isn't one.Delhomme had to go because he was done not because he held Moore back from being a leader.

Again I am not a reporter so I need no proof.  Your beef is with Voth and with Sorenson who have both said locker room issues are a big concern.  As for the money and other issues, I hoped to educate you about why it would make no sense to cut Smith unless there were some other issue than why teams cut players which is almost always money.

Clearly you have no grasp of the issues here so lets just agree to disagree.  I can't see how any more discussion will help you understand it and as my sig says, I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.  Believe what you want, it is a message board and I don't really care.

Why is that you argue with reporters who are intimately aware of what is going on with the Panthers.  If you are not a player or team official yourself I can only assume you are a fan who doesn't want it to be true so you go on and on about the fact it can't be true.  You people slay me.  You are just giving your opinion which is fine.  Just don't act as if it as legitimate as a reporter who has actually interviewed team officials and gotten the information from the horse's mouth.

I only post what is discussed by folks in the know.  I don't make this stuff and doubt they do either.

Smith will never see his contract in 2015 as it currently exists.

4/10/2012: Signed a four-year, $37.75 million contract. The deal contains $16.8 million guaranteed, including a $10 million signing bonus and each of Smith's first three base salaries. 2014: $4 million (+ $3 million option bonus), 2015: $7 million, 2016: $9 million (Option Year), 2017: Free Agent

Rotoworld reports 7 million in 2014 so that's fine by me, call it what you like.

As far as your tizzy on Locker Room issues, all I can judge it on is what's on the field gameday. I like what I see.

What else could it be? What else could what be? A couple lines in the papers by a clever GM putting his agenda out there.

he's evaluating all the players on the Panther's roster, good. Or maybe he's sending some misinformation out there pre-draft so there is some question what position might be the focus Round 1.

One thing for sure, Gettleman isn't going to announce in the paper what his furure roster or draft plans are, this isn't Dallas.
