Any Current or Former Air Force Here?

OP...

Forget it. Your college education means poo compared to kids who started planning for a military career in the 8th/9th grade.

You'll never get ahead of them.

You are an idiot.

OP go officer right away. Always strive for more and don't be content. If you join, make sure it's beneficial to you. If you go officer, stay away from the navy. You could end up a surface warfare officer and hate life.

That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

To the OP....if you are interested in OCS, get it in writing (committment) from day 1.  Do NOT enlist with the hopes of getting to OCS.  You may get screwed if you do.

"planning for a military career" and "air force" do not belong in the same sentence

Hahaha. Most are like "I want to be set up for a job when I get out". I think my childhood obsession with planes had something to do with it also.

E-4 is enlisted. Officers don't go to basic with enlisted men. Ots is completely separate from basic military training. If somehow you end up at lackland afb in tx, you screwed up and you would become an E-3 after basic. Like I said, talk to an officer recruiter.

I stand corrected. Never knew anyone who went straight into OTS.

My brother in law is a Colonel in the Air Force....flies F15 Strike Eagles.  My younger brother was thinking about the military as a possible carreer move a year ago when he graduated from grad school.  So, he was asking a lot of the same questions to my BOL.

If you have a college degree, you do not speak to a "recruiter." You need to call the district or area recruiting officer and speak with them. Walking into a recruiting office will get you nowhere except pissed off.

And, fwiw, there are more planes in the ocean than there are ships in the sky...

Just in case you like it and decide to make a career of it, try to get airborne school (at a minimum) into your contract.

Your masters degree may be good enough for you to make Major, but you rarely see field grade officers of any branch without airborne wings. Airborne is like the bare minimum to be taken seriously when you're trying to make rank.

Thinking of joining and working towards becoming an officer sometime soon. I have a master's degree so I can go to OTS after basic training but have heard that the selection board for Air Force officers is particularly competitive these days. I'm 24, have a master's degree in homeland security, athletic, and believe I possess good leadership qualities. Passing the exam should not be an issue. I plan on speaking with a recruiter soon but just wanted to hear from some people on here with military experience about the whole process of becoming an officer after completing basic. Once an officer, I'd like to do something intelligence or security related. What could I expect my salary to be as a commissioned officer with 0-2 years experience? How many years would I be required to serve at a minimum? Can they require me to move anywhere they say or would I be able to select my preferences?

My goal is to ultimately work for the federal government so former military tend to transition easier to that sector.

This site will connect you with an AF representative who can answer all your questions and get you headed in the right direction. They deal with individuals wanting to become commissioned officers.

As others have already stated, you should try and avoid signing up as an enlisted. While it is possible to become a commissioned officer that way, it doesn't always work out.

The other services are almost as good as the AF. If for some reason your first choice doesn't pan out, look into the Navy, Marines or Army. You'll meet and work with some amazing individuals, no matter the branch of service you ultimately choose.

Best of luck.
