Why did Gross retire?

Because the bolded sentence doesn't allow for that option. You're essentially contradicting yourself.

Is it only one of the two choices, or more?

If one of the reasons is Gross didn't wanted to play anymore.... Well there are several factors that could lead to him not wanting to play and one of those is his family.

So you proposed that he either just didn't want to play anymore OR he didn't think this team can make it to the Superbowl this year. Do you realize how vague option 1 is? You basically just said there are a million possibilities as to why he retired...OR he doesn't think we can make it to the Superbowl (which seems to be the agenda you're pushing here). Not wanting to play anymore could be attributed to his fear of injury, him wanting to spend time with the family, him not liking Rivera, or hey even...get this...not thinking we can make it to the Superbowl!

Of course if he retired, then he doesn't want to play anymore...that's the only reason for retiring in his case. If you WANT to play and you retire, then you're either injured or no team wants you, neither of which apply to him.

Jordan Gross has a press conference to retire. At that press conference he specifically says he wanted to retire when he felt like the team could have sustained long term success, and that time is now. And yet still we have people and their theories that he left because he thinks the team will suck? What the actual fug is wrong with you people. Get a fuging hobby that can occupy more of your time.

The problem I have with Rivera, and Shula heading into the playoffs was very few explosive plays, and an offense that was obviously trending down, not up.

We relied on Tolbert and Cam to score our TD's when we got close, we (many of us) knew that it was going to be tough to beat the more talented D's in the playoffs when they know what you have to do to score.

We need a better O Line, and some playmakers...badly.

I think you answered the problem already.  The problem in the playoffs, as well as the latter part of the season, IMO, is that our OL could not get any push against pretty much anybody.  We really became one dimensional.  Because of their inability to create space for the RB's, we had to rely on Cam making a play with his athleticism or Tolbert using his power to make one.  While I think DeAngelo is still a solid back, he's not the type of guy that can make something out of nothing.  He needs a solid OL to put him in position to make a play.

By the end of the season, teams knew we were overmatched in the trenches, so stacked the box, making it damn near impossible for us to get anything up the middle.  On one of those goal line plays, Cam said that Shula called a pass, but he audibled to a run, and realized too late it wasn't going to work.  So I don't think coaching decisions were the problem, we just didn't have the horses to execute.

We are missing some talent, for sure, but we are also missing some schemes.

Check out Shula's offensive rankings through the years, not pretty, including ours.

You're talking about me and if you notice I'm not on here nearly as much as you are and there is a reason for that.
