Why did Gross retire?

Lets see here.  A guy has likely 15 million dollars in the bank tax-free, never has to work a day in his life at the age of 33, can do whatever he wants doesn't want to come back to the grueling grind of football for another year for what would likely be a smaller contract than he has played on before so he can hope his team wins it all this year.

And people think that there must be a conspiracy because he doesn't want to play.  As he said before he was pissed at Gettleman for screwing with his money and making him take a cut and decided last Fall it wasn't worth it anymore so he retired.  That isn't a conspiracy it is coming to terms with his end of his career.  The same thing Smitty is going through right now.

I have no idea how much he loved the game but some guys retire and intimate that they didn't eat and breathe football like other players. Some great players even say they really never loved the game. People just have different levels of feelings for the game.

Gross also seems like the kind of guy who has other career aspirations

Even if you're picked as a favorite to get to the SB, there's always a lot of luck involved. You have to survive the injuries that hit every team to some extent. I think he decided that the wear and tear of 11 seasons outweighed his chances of getting to the SB. While I hate to lose his talents, I admire his decision.

Because he has his priorities. They may not jive with your's, but that's life. All the respect in the world to him.

Yep. And his career in football likely isn't over. He's just finished with the on-field part.

The vast majority of NFL players leave the game without a ring.

I respect him but he lied when he said he wanted to leave the team in good spot. This mine actually might set us back and keep us from getting weapons for Cam. If this happen I will always hold it against him. I wasn't asking for a three year contract just one more year to make the transition smoother

Every player wants to win on some level, but to say winning a Super Bowl is the only motivation (or at least the #1 motivation) of every single NFL player is very narrow-minded.

I agree but the main goal of any NFL player or any sports is to win the Championship game and the hold the trophy with your teammates.

But if you think you're team has a shot of winning something you've played your entire career for you don't walk away from that.

I'm not thinking about the fans, fug the fans. I'm saying if I'm Jordan Gross starting LT on the panthers and still playing at a high level why would I walk away? Especially after getting back in the playoffs.

For some people, there are actually things more important than winning a super bowl or even money. For him it was obviously more important to be healthy long term and to be able to spend more quality time with his family than he could while playing football.

I mean what does the super bowl ring mean to a player if he ends up paralyzed or with damage to the brain ? Don't you think any rational human would give back the ring and and even all the $ to be healthy again? Sent from my SPH-D710 using CarolinaHuddle mobile app

Smart ones know when to call it a career! Last season was his favor to us and he feels good about retiring now! Let him retiring be the positive sign it is instead of looking for Gman being a lousy GM. Gman is doing his job when Gross of all people feel he can retire cause he took this team personally
