Smitty meets with Gettleman today

Figured in all this too is good will to the Fan base and what it's worth.

This is why he'll make more here than anywhere else.  Anywhere else, Smitty is just a mercenary stop-gap veteran.  He has no history with the team and no future.  In Carolina, he's the best player in franchise history.

Steve Smith deserves more respect than that.

Last year on WFNZ, around mid season, Steve was asked several things, such as his contract, how long he wants to play, if he'd play elsewhere, etc.

Steve said his #1 goal right now is chasing career numbers, whether here or elsewhere. He wants 1,000 Rec & 15,000 Yd. Said he's older & right now it's all about numbers. When she if he's okay with not getting the ball if it means winning he said no. He wants the ball & will complain or demand it when he doesn't get his touches. He wants to reach milestones.

When asked if he'd restructure to help the team he laughed & said absolutely not, that he is under contract thru 2016 & he won't take anything less. Said his contract is non negotiable & he will play it out of go elsewhere.

Then he said he'd go elsewhere if they didn't want him because he's just chasing numbers. Those are his goals right now.

I remember him saying SOME of this, but a podcast link to confirm would be nice. It was this past offseason, but it would take me days to comb through old shows (not really that interested)

People lie, number don't. 750 yards receiving & 4 touch downs does not equal 7 million dollars...period.

Take a major pay cut & move to the slot is the only acceptable scenario.

Well let's get a bunch of shitty receivers since the OC either can't or won't maximize their talents and bring out their best. We can pay all our receivers the league minimum and blame them for being ranked so low on offense.

If Gettleman cuts Smitty, this fanbase will be alienated, and support will completely drop off. Put him in a different role that should've been done 4 years ago.

Not the whole fan base.  It would sting, but he's not going to be here forever.

Everyone who's saying cut him, you aren't going to save a bunch of money by doing so.  We would end up paying him 3 million plus for this year, while he collects another decent check with another team and probably win a championship.  The only player that should be cut this year that will actually give us cap room, is Godfrey.

By the way, Steve got open a lot this past season.  Sure he didn't get the kind of seperation that he was known for in his hayday, yet he still got open enough to put up your typical thousand yard season.  It's just that Cam was inconsistent on accuracy. (Some of that being his fault, and some due to a poor O-line)  Smitty can still ball, and it's not worth cutting him.  If you can restructure his deal, restructure it.  If you have to pay him the full 7 mil, do that.  Cutting him would just get us a spot on world's dumbest.

If you look at his contract this is a good time to cut him.

In June 2014, the Panthers have to make a decision.  With a $3 million option bonus payable from June 1 through June 30 and a $3 million non-exercise fee owed to Smith if he’s on the roster on July 1 and the team doesn’t pay the bonus, the Panthers must decide at that point whether to pay the money or cut Smith loose.

Paying the option extended Smith’s contract through 2016, at a base salary of $9 million.

If steve doesn't rework his contract then he could realistically be cut. There is no way he is getting 9 mil in 2016. Keeping him on  this team next year will trigger the extra year. We need the money badly for Cam and Luke by 2016.

Marty built a fail safe in steve's contract and this is it right here. I don't think even Marty intended Steve to last to 2016 and paying 9 mil to a 37 yr old WR.

I just think SS89's spot as the #1 WR is up for evaluation. not whether or not he'll remain on the team.      I think the front office may be coming to terms with him needing to be in the slot now...

In which case, I hope Gman gets a #1 WR this off-season and not just re-sign Ginn and promote Ginn to #1.

I don't see the proiblem Smitty is asking for YEARS for a new N1 Wr.

Watch out with stats, the number of third downs is much more valuable.

Negative comments about Smitty are for me unbelievable on a Carolina Panthers fans site.

But i can't say i am supprised,  saw the same kind of threads before about so many players.

Obviously this is a cultural gap between Europe and USA.

So sorry about that, i'll try to stay away from the idols bashing threads because for me loyalty and frienship are far ahead of pragmatism.

If true, then you are a fan of a player and not the team.  Great teams like the Patriots make hard cuts and moves every year.  And their fanbase understands this is necessary to keep refueling the team and organization.

Agree on the different role for Smith....but with that comes a different cost.  His production does not warrant a $7m a season pricetag.

For the love of!! Production has dipped....is it due to offensive scheme or Smitty? Maybe a bit of both, but in no way is it all on 89. I would still choose him in any clutch situation anywhere on that field everyday and 4 times on Sunday. It's Steve Smith. Steve freaking Smith. His heart and passion for this game is second to none. Still. Father Time may be creepin, but Smitty is still Smitty. Come on.
