Smitty meets with Gettleman today

Sure, I see that. In fairness, I doubt they really care much about Smitty's radio appearances. The media tend to give themselves more influence because they are so focused on their jobs--people only have what the media present them, so the only details they have about the "rift" are from the radio, internet, newspaper. Gettlemen was being prodded for information and he tried to answer by complimenting Smith's accomplishments and refusing to address the specifics of the inappropriate question. Smitty was then being prodded for a reaction to the comments that were prodded out of Gettlemen. Then they write the story as if they weren't the instagators.

Lol yes. It's fairly sensationalized. We fall for it too.

Hey you try to type correctly while your all doped up on pain killers and muscle relaxers from a spinal injury where you waiting for the VA to fuse your vertebra and most likely make you wheel chair bound for the rest of your life! So I'm so sad that your little head was hurting. Yeah and this reply had so much to do with the topic at hand. What an ass!

sorry to hear about your health issues...hope the surgery went well.

Does not change the fact that no one could understand anything that you wrote.  Don't be so damn sensitive when someone points out that your post was pretty much a rambling string of incoherent words.

Carry on.

Deangelo Williams and Stew were signed based on 3. Emotional decisions in this business will screw you hard. In panthers history, just about all the big mistakes were based on emotional/loyalist decisions.

1) Deangelo + Stew big contracts

2) Overpaying Charles Johnson

3) Beason's contract - nothing we could do about this one really.

Not defending Hurney, but Beason is hindsight 20/20. At the time he was one of the best ILB outside of Pattrick Willis and Ray Lewis. Couldnt perdict he would blow his Achilles.

Charles Johnson was potentially about to go to Atl. We just came off a year with a lame duck coach, Jimmy Clasuen throwing 2 TDs the whole year, and Brian St. Pierre was a spark in our offense. He had to overpay to keep him here

That definitely is the question .

Abd, I would say that if we were not in cap hell with huge holes at LT, CB, and WR there woukd not be a big question as to whether we pays him. But, given the position we are in....we may be forced to make some really tough and unpopular decisions.

Only tine will tell how Gett continues this cap recovery project.

We pay him either way so the cap situation is not relieved by cutting SS. It is not really a factor right now. But of course you knew that .

So you don't understand that every salary in a salary cap environment has to be evaluated vs production...and judged against the opportunity costs that would be attained by the team by spending all or a portion elsewhere. Hope you have other skills, because a successful career in business and management is nowhere in your future.

GM's and owners who base their decisions on emotion and the attitude that a player has earned the right to be overpaid late in their career are usually short lived. This is a business and most of these guys are shrewd business men.

if you pay for something you want to get something for it.That is the reason the business side as presented makes no sense. Just as your reply made no sense.

Smith is being a complete diva & acting like a butthurt girl.

There was no reason for them to meet & "clear the air." I'm glad Cam didn't throw a temper tantrum when Gettleman's words were taken out of context.

You are the one acting much more like a butthurt girl.  Wait ...I do not know what a butthurt girl is.

It doesn't cost the team to cut him, it saves them 1 million this season, 4 million next season, and 10 million in 2016. He losses 3 million of the 6 million he thought he was going to get coming into the season if he's cut.

I thought it was 2 million it would save us this year.......I may be wrong.

The real question is not what we are paying Smitty ...it is the cap relief we get either trading him or cutting him?

I get it if we trade him..... but to save a couple million and lose his production is an interesting debate . Surely some of the intangibles have some value in deciding whether to keep him or not.I really do not see a compelling reason to just cut him.....not for 1 or 2 million in cap space. There will be a cost to replace him and we all know it takes some time to develop a rookie.

I think it is about not getting locked into the 2015 and 2016 money more than anything. It's my understanding that if there's no renegotiating of the contract now then the Panthers have to pay him 7 million in 2015 and 9 million in 2016 or more as I've seen higher numbers. If they cut him now it cost a little in cap in 2014 but after that he's off the books and that money can go to another player or players. Am I wrong?

Looking unemotionally at the Steve Smith conversation, we have to accept that his days are numbered.  I love Smith.  He's grown up and been the best player to wear the Panthers' uniform.  At that price, heck even for this year, he's got to be a big yardage, big play guy.  Now we'll look at the total numbers of catches and yards and TDs, but we'll also have to compare those (low) numbers to the critical conversions (3rd/4th/2pt) that he made this past year.  How often was he shut out by single coverage?  Does he still command special attention of a defense that will allow other guys to make plays?

If he can still move the chains, make those big time conversions that help us win, and open things up for some other WRs, then you have to pay him and keep him.  I think we're going to see Smith around for the 2014 season due to the fact there is NOTHING else on our roster aside from Greg Olsen who can make plays in the passing game.
