Smitty meets with Gettleman today

There is definitely a difference between Mike Shula's offense, and Rob Chudzinksi's. Our passing game was certainly different.

You also have to factor in that Steve Smith missed most of the Saints game in Charlotte, and the Falcons game in Atlanta.

By the way, in that Atlanta game without Steve Smith on the field, Lafell had zero yards.

Could it be that we ran smith differently because of his decline? Maybe that was obvious in tc. I honestly don't know. Just a thought

Trading Steve Smith, to me, is like trading our logo. I want no part of it. Hopefully, these issues will be resolved during the offseason. Maybe, there will be more of these meetings between him & gets as time progresses?

This is like a divorce but I get to keep my 401K

There are 3 parts to this equation;

#1- the business side

#2- the realist based on position

#3- the loyalist.

#1 just sees dollars signs and stats and doesn't care. He's too old, cost too much and his production is down.

#2 knows that we don't have anyone who can replace him right now, on the field AND in the locker room. Even though he cost a lot the ROI is still worth it until a replacement is signed.

#3 has watched Smith stick with this team for years, be the BEST WR in the NFL, survive the clausen, tommy john, vinny testerverde days and still stay loyal to this team. No matter how high or how low, he hung with this crappy team and even though he probably wasted his prime here, he did it cause he is a panther at heart. Always and forever. Now this team is a little successful and the future is bright and NOW we want to drop him. We owe it to Smith, he payed it forward, now it's time to pay it back. SB or bust baby.

I understand the 1's but don't agree.

The 2's make sense.

And the 3's project qualities that are hard to find; honor and respect.

Steve Smith deserves our honor and respect, and we also deserve a chance to move forward

We can do that collectively. Smith isn't an idiot, but they did resign him. All will work out in the end. He deserves 1 more year regardless, were in cap hell anyways, then he can train his replacement we are about to draft.

Everyone wins.

It's possible. There are certainly limitations to his game now that weren't a factor when he was younger. People talk about how much he's being paid, but we signed him to that contract knowing full well that he would be in his late thirties by the time he reached the end of it. There aren't many receivers who can go out there, and put up big numbers at that age while still being the focal point of the offense.

Reworking his deal, and getting a playmaker in the draft is the best course of action.

I don't think numbering the receiver has anything to do with whether they play z, x, or y. It's just who's the primary target or best of the bunch. The whole WR1, WR2 thing is a fantasy concept. Smith wouldn't all of a sudden expect less money for playing slot vs z or

Disagree. Ask t the 49ers about the value of a number 1 vs a slot

Let me start by saying this...I love Steve smith and I appreciate everything that he has done for the panthers. Now...the TRUTH...he is an absolute diva, he is ultra sensitive to any comment about him that has any perceived negative tone - even constructive criticism, he is a proven bully even in his own locker room. He is set to make 7 million dollars this year: he had 750 yards and 4 touchdowns. Yes, it is time to say goodbye to steve smith the drama queen. It is time for other leaders (cam & luke) to take control of this the locker room without having to worry about pissing Steve smith off. Every dog has his day...Steve has had his. He needs to ride off in the sunset without causing a big damn scene. Dave gettleman's comments were spot on. He said smith would be evaluated right? Just like every player. Steve smith took offense to these comments like he's above evaluation...no he isn't. And we now have a GM that gets it. At the end of the day steve smith is 1 of 53 players on our ball team....nothing more, nothing less. If he thinks he's above being evaluated as a player...goodbye!

the drama queen calling the player a diva. LOL! SS is SS and as long as he is high strung and wound tight I want him on the team. he will be here at least 2 more seasons so save your whining for then.to reword another thread "smitty is staying so get over it!"

Deangelo Williams and Stew were signed based on 3. Emotional decisions in this business will screw you hard. In panthers history, just about all the big mistakes were based on emotional/loyalist decisions.

1) Deangelo + Stew big contracts

2) Overpaying Charles Johnson

3) Beason's contract - nothing we could do about this one really.

The paycut and voiding his 2016 is the key to keeping smith.

Marty knew when he gave Steve the deal he would not be playing the entire deal out. This article here sums it up well.

Basically Marty was getting pretty screwed in salary cap space and gave steve a very friendly deal so he could make moves in the present. He knew he would have to deal with the bad contract he handed out in the future. Well we have reach that day.

what paycut? What incentive does Smith have in taking a paycut? They have him now and if they get rid of him they still pay so we can pay iim and play him or we can cut him and pay him and ot gain any cap space. Hmm let me see?
