Smitty meets with Gettleman today

On the "Well the 49ers cut Jerry Rice so obviously that means we can cut Steve Smith" argument, they actually already had another talented receiver on their roster, his name was Terrell Owens, who proceeded to put up 3900 total yards through the next 3 seasons on his way to 3 straight pro bowls. Right now we've got uhhhhhh, I'm drawing a blank here. Oh yeah, that's right, Steve Smith is the only WR we have under contract.

Jerry Rice was told to go away and kick rocks. What makes you think Steve is above being replaced?

Yeah that's a little different from this situation.

Please don't hate me, But I'm hearing smitty is done.

I'm not out for glory or anything, but from what I'm hearing from a friend of a friend, Smitty is done with us. Normally I would take this as hearsay, but the same friend of a friend said Gross was retiring a day or two before it was announced back when it was still a toss up for everyone else.

I don't want this to be true, Steve is my all time favorite player, call me an idiot or an asshole or what have you, I'm not NJPanthers and I'm not trying to say I'm some dude with connections to the organization. I just heard from a guy who knows a guy, take it with a grain of salt.

Here's what I have gathered, again all third hand, so if it's not true, I'm happy to be wrong:

The meeting with Getts yesterday was to tell Smitty we were looking to move on. We are trying to trade him, two teams that showed interest are SD and NE. We want picks or a starter on the o-line or secondary. If we don't get what we want, Smitty will be designated a June 1st Cut. We are not going to bring Lafell or hixon back, but have a verbal agreement with Ginn.

We are making a push at Hakeem Nicks and are looking to draft at least 2 WR's this year.

again, Just what I've heard

This wouldn't be shocking at all, but a player for player swap is always tough to pull off.

If SS's only goal is HOF, then this is probably his best way to achieve that.  He would probably catch 70-90 catches for either of these teams/QB's.

Like I've said before, people think the grass is always greener. You want life without Steve Smith, and no viable options outside Greg Olsen. Well, you may just well get your wish, and I think many will be singing quite a different tune come October, if that does indeed happen.

Listen, at the end of the day it is what it is, but we are a new franchise and Smitty IS the Panthers, thick and thin.  Getting rid of him is really dumb.  It's also really dumb if he doesn't want to play ball in lieu of the current cap.  We are definitely ushering in a new era but Gettleman should be fighting tooth and nail to keep the general that's taken us through the trenches.  You do remember the trenches don't you?

I don't think there is one person on the Huddle that wants this.

Also, as an aside, if he ends up elsewhere I will root for his team as long as they're not playing us.  I obviously have the right to rescind this remark if he goes to the patriots or saints or some bs like that.

No one wants this ride to be over, but we have to look at the next 5 years, not the next 5 months.

SS is the best player that has ever worn a Panthers uniform, but sometimes the ride has to end, and this may be that time.

If Steve wants to stay, he certainly can, however I would assume that it will have to be for less money, and he doesn't want to do that.

Seriously, though, I would have thought that we'd have heard something by now, so I'm beginning to think that there is some fire to all this somewhere.

Gettleman strikes me as someone who takes his time and gets all his ducks in a row before making his moves.

We've seen the Gano signing and Hardy tagged just in the last few days.  Could be more to come before next Tuesday.

Well it may not be what they want, but it's likely to be the result. If we cut Steve Smith (our #1 receiver right now) because he's overpaid, we can't expect some random receiver to take 1-2 million a year, and put up flashy numbers in a Mike Shula offense as our #1 receiver.

If someone out there knows a guy who is younger, much cheaper, and a better leader, for that money, well by all means please do tell.

This is a total assumption.....but I just can't, under any circumstance, see the Panthers parting ways with Steve without a plan to bring in a serviceable vet (750 yards and 4 TDs isn't that hard to replace) AND a plan to draft one or two WRs.  If releasing Steve happens and it turns into a "the answers is on the roster" scenario, then all hell should break loose because if G-Man believes that we have a serious problem at GM.  But again....if it happens I will give them the benefit of the doubt to see how FA pans out before I overreact.

No one wants to lose Steve and not have a replacement solution in place.
