Smitty meets with Gettleman today

You don't lose your catching ability as you age.

Correct to a point! Being hurt imposes on the ability to catch! He is not going to heal like he used to! Even though he is still good, we all saw last season that his ability is fading! I saw grimace and fear in his eyes this season and first time I have ever seen fear in him. A man he is, but a man past his prime he is becoming.

Whatever the reason for lack of production he's not worth 9 million at 35 years old. It's either restructure now or he's gone by June. If the panthers have to commit to paying him that kind of salary you can either say bye to cam or luke ( not going to happen) or enjoy an old smith, travares king, mcnutt and a 5th round draft pick comprising the receiving corps for the next couple years.

His cap number is 7 mil this season.

I realize that some of you may not believe Smitty is worth 7 mil per year. I get that, especially within the context of our cap situation. It would be nice if Smitty takes one for the team.  That being said, I think we would all agree that Smitty would probably best serve the team in the slot.  That being the case, then you have to ask yourself what the market is for the best slot receivers out there.  Welker got 6 mil last year, and will earn 6 mil this year.  I've got to think that Smitty would be worth that and maybe more. Are you telling me that Welker is worth more than Smitty? Seriously. Like I've alluded to before, his salary in the 2014 season is not an outlandish notion. Now 2015 and 16 may be troubling, but hopefully we'll cross that bridge when we get to it (if it's not taken care of in the immediate future).

Please don't hate me, But I'm hearing smitty is done.

I'm not out for glory or anything, but from what I'm hearing from a friend of a friend, Smitty is done with us. Normally I would take this as hearsay, but the same friend of a friend said Gross was retiring a day or two before it was announced back when it was still a toss up for everyone else.

I don't want this to be true, Steve is my all time favorite player, call me an idiot or an asshole or what have you, I'm not NJPanthers and I'm not trying to say I'm some dude with connections to the organization. I just heard from a guy who knows a guy, take it with a grain of salt.

Here's what I have gathered, again all third hand, so if it's not true, I'm happy to be wrong:

The meeting with Getts yesterday was to tell Smitty we were looking to move on. We are trying to trade him, two teams that showed interest are SD and NE. We want picks or a starter on the o-line or secondary. If we don't get what we want, Smitty will be designated a June 1st Cut. We are not going to bring Lafell or hixon back, but have a verbal agreement with Ginn.

We are making a push at Hakeem Nicks and are looking to draft at least 2 WR's this year.

again, Just what I've heard

No idea whether you have a valid source or not, but none of what you wrote is exactly farfetched.

Makes sense, but it just seems like logical speculation at this point.

I will say this, if that scenario holds true...I will be pleased. Love Smitty with all of my heart, but if we are going to move on now is the time to do it.

Did they say what we are going to do about the LT?

Last year on WFNZ, around mid season, Steve was asked several things, such as his contract, how long he wants to play, if he'd play elsewhere, etc.

Steve said his #1 goal right now is chasing career numbers, whether here or elsewhere. He wants 1,000 Rec & 15,000 Yd. Said he's older & right now it's all about numbers. When she if he's okay with not getting the ball if it means winning he said no. He wants the ball & will complain or demand it when he doesn't get his touches. He wants to reach milestones.

When asked if he'd restructure to help the team he laughed & said absolutely not, that he is under contract thru 2016 & he won't take anything less. Said his contract is non negotiable & he will play it out of go elsewhere.

Then he said he'd go elsewhere if they didn't want him because he's just chasing numbers. Those are his goals right now.

Sorry, didn't mean to interject reality into the SS89 suckfest. As you were...

I know Batman is not everyone's favorite person around here and people want to call this BS but I can confirm that this is just about 100% true and almost word for word from what I remember. The only thing I don't remember is him talking about playing elsewhere but he probably did.

The other parts about being all about chasing numbers now, not being ok with not getting the ball even if they are winning, etc. are very accurate.

I don't know how to reconcile Smitty saying a few years back that he was ready for the Panthers to bring in his heir (in so many words), and then saying that he basically wants to be a ball hog to chase numbers notwithstanding winning.

Something is missing.

God, the thought of Smitty in a NE uni is nauseating.

I hope if this happens, both sides stay respectful and don't engage in any bitter pot shots. That's asking a lot of 89, though.

Regardless of what happens (if anything happens at all), I think Steve Smith has too much respect for JR to let that happen and vice versa. He may voice his displeasure, but I don't think bitter pot shots to the organization would be an issue.

Now a couple jabs at Gman.....very possible.
