Eagles have released Jason Avant

Would rather have him than bring Ted Ginn back.

i'd rather have both. very different players who would have very different roles.

Meh, I would say he met all expectations both on and off the field. Andy Reid moved up to draft him in the 4th round because he wanted a receiver with "great hands, toughness, leadership; intelligence, and good route running". He hit on everyone of those and I can't think of one person in Philly (in the organization or fans) that would say he fell short of anything. He is probably only behind Brian Dawkins as the most beloved player recently with the Eagles.

Avant would be a good addition to any team including the Panthers but I don't think he really fits a need here. His game is the exact same one Steve Smith should be running. Gritty, tough, slot receiver running intermidiate routes and making the tough plays.

i wanted us to draft him. i don't see he and smitty playing the same role as a problem. we all know smith's time here is limited and even under the assumption that he is here this year, we've been incredibly lucky these past few years that he hasn't gotten hurt and missed time. avant would be a great insurance policy ffor smith and someone who could step into his shoes as a player and a leader

he's not the fiery presence or threat smith is,  but he still would bring a lot of needed production and vet leadership/experience to the table.

i really hope we can afford to bring him in.

Always seemed to me like he kept fading back further behind other guys. I suppose that could just be under Kelly.

The thing about him playing a similar role to Steve Smith is that it's not dead certain Smith will be on the team.

It's terrible that this is the selling point.  On most teams, thats just an expectation for any WR on the roster

Yes, but no. Most teams have guys who drop the ball every once in a while and then maybe their #2 or #3 guy is stone handed and drops too many balls. Very few teams have numerous guys that catch everything that comes their way. Avant is a premier catcher in this league. Up there with Alshon Jeffrey and Brandon Marshall. Doesn't have the route running ability, speed or size of them but he catches as well or better.

No there is some truth to that and yes it became even more prevalent when Kelly arrived. He's basically always been a very good #3 WR with more value than that because of his great hands, leadership, and he is an exceptional blocker.

Gotta admit that sounds more Ricky Proehl than Steve Smith to me.
