Hardy Update: He signs tender, long term talks continue

Well, if they couldn't make a long term deal with him, what options did we have?

Franchise or let him walk correct?

We'd get what, a 3rd round compensatory pick or something?  Maybe...?

This way we get another year out of  him, time to make a deal and the potential for 2 1st rounders if a team wants him bad enough...

If we can't get a long term deal, we should've let him walk. Use the money to finish building a complete team. 3rd rounder isn't too bad anyway. We could use the money to build the line, secondary, get a couple more weapons for Cam.

I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on this stuff... I have no idea what Gman's plans re this are.

I'm just hoping he knows what he's doing...  he's done pretty well so far.  :)

Hardy is going to be expensive this year, but the bright side is he still has plenty of incentive to play hard and we kept one of the leagues top D lines intact...

I'm still not convinced that we're going to have a tremendously bad year.  I mean, if we lose Mitchel and Captain, then we're going to need starters.  But last year we started an undrafted rookie in White, had another play significant snaps, Lester, with a large dose of Drayton Florence, who graded pretty badly in the CB stuff.  So I don't see people dropping 30 on us a game.

We were the #2 scoring D when our best CB was the much maligned (around here) Captain Munnerlyn.  Mitchell brought a lot of confidence and played well.  They still need to figure out a way to bring him back, but he might have a hotter market than we can afford.  He seemed to want to come back so I wonder what the fair market value will be on his services.

As we play more of the what-if game, lets also consider that our GM knows a lot more about moving money, player evaluations, and everything football related.  He helped to build a great Giants team that played very well once Eli's light came on (Elite?!?  remember those comments).  Add talent to the back end with cheap FAs (ditto from last year), a draft pick if there's some value, and see if we can bring Mitchell back for a fair contract.  I still think we spend most of next season in the top 10 defenses.

EDIT:  Oh, and I must include my prominent thought when talking about cutting and replacing guys.  Where is the replacement.  I will conceded to Snake that there aren't any real replacements on the roster, which is kind of scary =)

this is people just overreacting. every single offseason, especially last years. People freaked the fug out over moves, then it was proven they are the right ones. I'm reserving judgement until after the draft and FA to make up my mind about what kind of team this is. People also tend to forget players get better as the years go on. We started 6 rookies on the defensive side of the ball at one time and we were the #1 D for the majority of the season.

honestly i think the approach DG is taking is he's going to pay Hardy then we are gonna cut CJ within the next two years.

CJ will be pushing 30 and Hardy just turned 25. I think CJ is the better overall DE, but Hardy still hasn't hit his ceiling. I don't know the cap numbers but seems to me this will be the way we are headed with the line. Keep the line intact as much as possible because it is our best strength outside of the linebacker position.

I dont think we will have like a 3-13 season but I do think with whats happened we will see a 8-8 team in a year with a easy schedule. In other words a down year because we could have done way better. With Hardy signing we are more cash strapped than even last year, thats what concerns me.

Natural tendency to over react even when we as fans have no idea the strategy. Even when everybody states they love our GM the tendency is to worry or over react.

I trust given the amount of money on the line this fits in to both our long term and short term goals.

I do agree we will be looking to get out from under the CJ contract in a year or two. With the cost of DEs my gut is you will be signing young guys under the rookie CBA and letting the more expensive one go rotating them in a way where you are only paying one big contract at a time.

You don't cut somebody just cause they're turning 30, besides CJ for the first 3 years of his career was rotational so it's not like he'll be tearing down

How are we more cash strapped than last year?

thats not what i meant. I meant we can't have two top paid DE's and expect a well rounded team. CJ would be older therefore he would be cut, not Hardy.

Peak offseason right here.

I'll let my buddy Rust, from the HBO show True Detectives, handle this one:

Quit being greedy you overrated bastard.

I doubt they get him or Rosenhaus to agree to anything. Dude gets escorted in Bentley's from airports. Dude only makes $500k but acts & spends like he makes $500m.

He wants money. And he'll never live up to it whenever he gets it.

you're quite the pessimistic.

You born or raised that way ?

I've tried to go back and listen to how Gman worded his response to the Hardy situation and figure out what he meant. I don't have the exact quote but it seemed to me that he was leaving his options open for the best deal he could get whether it was a contract or trade by tagging him. I'm not sure he is in an all fired hurry to keep him at what he will command. I think he honestly knows his cost is too high for us under the circumstances with the contract CJ has but just doesn't want to let him walk for compensatory pick.
