Report: Eugene Monroe option for Panthers

Actually would not surprise me for Gett to make a big move at LT.  The players he brought in last year were complimentary players to round out our roster.  However, your LT is a whole different ball game.  They are usually viewed as the 2nd most important position on the field.

You may very well be correct on how Gett handles this, but he could surprise us all.

This is why I would not keep Hardy on the $13M tag.  Let him go and sign your starting LT and get a very good WR with the same money.

I agree.... the LT is on an island. You cannot mask the play of LT. I do not even think with the 28th pick we would get someone that is ready to start.

I love how passionate everyone is about the financial responsibility of the Panthers.  We need to remember that Gettleman has a game plan.  He knows what he's doing while we just speculate.

That being said, if he could get a starting LT out of FA for even a one year rental...we should all dance, sing and praise him for his Gettle-magic!  Heck, we should all get his face tatooed on our bodies...  OK, not really.

There is some incentive for Monroe to come here even on a cheaper 1 year deal.  A chance to play on a winning team that's going to have a nasty D again.  The chance to go far in the Playoffs (goal?), and to get better exposure on Sport Center with those Cam highlights.

So if he'll come and hold down the fort for a year, awesome =)  If not, we'll find someone else. It's in Gettleman we trust now.

He will really have to work magic to get a guy the quality of Monroe on a one year deal

I see Aaron breaking big stories on a regular basis. How does he get Panthers related news before our beat writer?

Established connections and good old fashioned hard work.

From what I've read, he's one of the hardest working reporters out there.

LT is a big need and Gman knows this. It is our top FA priority. Except him to look for a young guy with starting experience that is on a loaded OL possibly. He's also going to try upgrade some of the FA's from last year at positions of need if he can with cheaper alternatives. You can't have pro bowlers at every position but you must have them at least at the 4 key positions. Those are Quarterback, Center, Left Tackler and Middle Linebacker. We are 3 for 4 right now. Not manditory but crucial positions are 1 elite Defensive End 1 primary Wide Receiver and either a stud Corner or Safety. These positions can be compensated for with multiple good players at those positions without having a pro bowler at each. These positions are where good drafting can replenish the ranks when need to avoid overpaying for them and having the next good player waiting to step in.

Since when has Center been a key position?

If they sign him or an established LT starter -- it's gonna give us more wiggle room in the draft. Personally, I hope they sign one of the marquee OTs over a guy like Nicks.

One of the few times I've agreed with you.

Agreed... you're pretty much assured of not finding a starting LT in the draft... which is why it makes me think they will make some kind of move like this.

Had Gross stayed one more year, we could have drafted an OT, started him at RT and then moved him...  we'll see.

It has always been in the pros as far as I can tell. The Center is the anchor and the brains of the OL. He makes the protection calls if he's worth his salt. Granted some don't but they are not pro bowl caliber either. You certainly don't want to build your line around JAG at Center. That's why it's a key position in my book. You noticed that the Panthers jumped all over Kalil in the draft and look how it's worked out. It's one of the positions that you definitely do not want a revolving door of players unlike other positions that can be offset by the surrounding cast.

agreed. i think there are some guys who will grow to become really good starters, but at 28 i don't see any and we can't afford to use that pick for a guy that won't be ready day one.

that said, i do think that there are guys who would be instant starters at RT as late as even round three or four and do a decent job and fit gentleman's hog molly mold.
