Report: Eugene Monroe option for Panthers

I think Mitchell is more important than OT. We can get a viable starter such as Oher, for not too expensive even after keeping Mitchell.

Yeah it sure would be a shame if we waste any money signing a young player who is one of the premiere talents at the 2nd most important position on the field over signing our middle of the road box safety

I mean afterall we can get that guy who was in that movie and he'd probably be even better because he knows Sandra bullock

Mitchell is greatly important for leadership, and defense wins championships. We can easily get a good enough OT as a stop gap solution and address the need in this draft, later drafts, or when we have more cap room next year through FA. I don't know if you've ever watched Oher play or not, but forget the damn movie. He's a solid player. Is he elite? No. Will he come cheapish and be a good enough option? YES. And not just him, but other mid-range tackles like him. Mitchell we know plays well in our secondary and is a fantastic leader and happy to be in Charlotte. We can't let him walk.

It is ALOT easier to find a stopgap player at Safety than at LT. Now  I like Mitchell and also think that we will have more money once Hardy signs his longterm deal so we can do both. But if it becomes an either or, you have to take the  LT capable of protecting the franchise QB over a journeyman safety.

Speaking of Monroe, that Jacksonville is another example of crappy team drafting redundantly. They drafted him #8 overall in 2009, got rid of him 3 years later and draft Joeckel #2 overall last year. He's still only 26 years old. They BPA picking #2 overall. That's actually funny. Bad teams just don't know what to do with their high draft picks. So many dumb asses in the league. No wonder Billicheck is called a genius for doing the most logical and rational thing.

How good is Monroe? I don't know much about him. Played 5 seasons for the Jags and Ravens, no Pro-Bowls.

He's no drop off from Gross. He's the best free agent tackle on the market I would say. We sign him He'll be our starting LT and do the job pretty darn well. I don't think we'll get him though but who knows. If he hits the market, we could offer something with what Gross was making which was 5 million a year but I'm sure somebody will go higher than that.

Based on how Gettleman handled FA last year, you can pretty much not expect us to sign a guy like this at all, especially with our cap situation. It's highly likely that he stands by again while the initial wave of FA signings occur, and then when things settle he will give some offers.

Let's not forget that we still have some of our own FA's to sign as well.

Actually would not surprise me for Gett to make a big move at LT.  The players he brought in last year were complimentary players to round out our roster.  However, your LT is a whole different ball game.  They are usually viewed as the 2nd most important position on the field.

You may very well be correct on how Gett handles this, but he could surprise us all.

This is why I would not keep Hardy on the $13M tag.  Let him go and sign your starting LT and get a very good WR with the same money.

LT is a big need and Gman knows this. It is our top FA priority. Expect him to look for a young guy with starting experience that is on a loaded OL possibly. He's also going to try upgrade some of the FA's from last year at positions of need if he can with cheaper alternatives. You can't have pro bowlers at every position but you must have them at least at the 4 key positions. Those are Quarterback, Center, Left Tackler and Middle Linebacker. We are 3 for 4 right now. Not manditory but crucial positions are 1 elite Defensive End 1 primary Wide Receiver and either a stud Corner or Safety. These positions can be compensated for with multiple good players at those positions without having a pro bowler at each. These positions are where good drafting can replenish the ranks when need to avoid overpaying for them and having the next good player waiting to step in. I love how passionate everyone is about the financial responsibility of the Panthers.  We need to remember that Gettleman has a game plan.  He knows what he's doing while we just speculate.

That being said, if he could get a starting LT out of FA for even a one year rental...we should all dance, sing and praise him for his Gettle-magic!  Heck, we should all get his face tatooed on our bodies...  OK, not really.

There is some incentive for Monroe to come here even on a cheaper 1 year deal.  A chance to play on a winning team that's going to have a nasty D again.  The chance to go far in the Playoffs (goal?), and to get better exposure on Sport Center with those Cam highlights.

So if he'll come and hold down the fort for a year, awesome =)  If not, we'll find someone else. It's in Gettleman we trust now.
