Report: Eugene Monroe option for Panthers

I can see both sides of the argument about keeping/not keeping Hardy, both have valid points. But as I said in another thread, I think the salary cap increase changed everything. Personally I would rather keep him, add pieces through the draft, and make another run with this defense.

If we make that gamble, I do hope it really increases. If not, we are fuged even worse than we are now.

How about restructuring some of Charles Johnson's contract, could easily create another $6-8mil there surely?.

We could, and it's there if we need it, but I would rather not touch any more of CJ's money unless we have to.  If we do, that takes some of our future flexibility away.  As it stands, CJ's money begins to get manageable just as Hardy's should be exploding, so it is a good balance for what we allocate to our DE's.  However, if we extend CJ again, there will be more overlap than I would like.  Unfortunately, in todays NFL, it's often necessary to restructure some contracts in order to get/keep your team where you want it, but we have to be careful not to overdo it.

Don't June 1 cuts save cap room in June?  If so, don't add $5m to the cap for free agency purposes (as Linville suggests).  Maybe you can use that to sign your draft picks, but we can't chase a free agent with the $$.

Having him cut his salary and play is the best option for him and us.  He would give us depth at S, as you mention, and allow us to focus on another area.

Yep, if we cut Godfrey and designate him as a June 1 cut, then we can't use that money until after June 1st.  I was looking at it as a whole...money to bring in FA's from other teams, keep our own FA's we want, pay for our rookies, and have misc. funds available during the season.  As you say, they can use the June 1 money on our rookies, as well as still have some misc. funds for the season.  And it would still leave us with plenty of cap space now to do whatever we need to in FA...including brining in a guy like Monroe.

So, in my scenario we would have probably a little over 12 million to use in FA (since the Godfrey money would take care of the rest).  It would probably take something like 5 years at 45 million to get Monroe (less for some other guys like Collins).  We would likely structure his 1st year cap hit to be about 5 million or so, which would still leave us with more than 7 million to sign our own guys and bring in a handful of 1 year deals.  IMO, that's very doable.

With that said, I do agree with your thought that the best option is to rework his deal and keep him as depth.  In fact, that is what I think the team ultimately prefers.  However, he would have to take a substantial pay cut to make that happen, which I don't know if he will do.  I don't know that he won't either, but either way, we should get significant cap savings from him.

I'm with you on the Godfrey tidbit. I think if he's willing to take a pay cut then the team will have no problem bringing him back. If we cut him still have to deal with dead money this year & next. If he's healthy & willing to take a pay cut why not bring him back. He's above average at FS & with Mitchell at SS we could be set on the back end & the draft can provide the CBs to make this defense even sicker.Use the other picks on offense. Point being if the injury is good on Godfrey & the pay cut happens I would welcome him back with this front 7 any day of the week.

"OT Eugene Monroe will be the Dolphins’ primary target if he reaches free agency, says the Miami Herald’s Armando Salguero. ”Monroe is good but not yet elite. So paying him $11.5 million to $12 million per season suggests overpaying. That’s elite tackle money. … So if the Dolphins can get Monroe for somewhere between $9 million to $11 million per season, they should be pleased.”  "

we don't have that kind of money...he won't be here.

We didnt exactly offer tolbert the most money either, but he wanted to play for a winner.

It comes down to does Monroe want to become Bradys b*tch on a terrible team whose locker room is the most scrutinized place on the planet or for a team that cant offer him as much $$$$ but can offer him a chance to play on a very good team.

Tolbert wanted to come back to NC because it is his home. We weren't a winner when he signed here. The same cannot be said for Monroe. He played college ball at Virginia and highschool football in New Jersey. He has no ties here to make him want to take a discount. He will make a lot of money and it likely won't be here. I would love to have him but it's looking more and more likely that we can't afford him.
