Report: Eugene Monroe option for Panthers

how much is he going to cost and can we fit Monroe (or any other top FA OT) into our budget? Still need to sign Ginn, Captain, Mitchell (and MAYBE lafell for the right price) IMHO

Monroe will get between 7-9mil. More likely 8-8.5mil a year. I cant see Monroe getting more than what Jake Long got last year 34mil/8.5 per year.

Right now, we have about 8 mil in cap space if correct.

If we get some other guys to restructure and 89 will take a pay cut, we could be in a position to do so. In Gettleman, I trust. We were worst off last year.

Actually would not surprise me for Gett to make a big move at LT. The players he brought in last year were complimentary players to round out our roster. However, your LT is a whole different ball game. They are usually viewed as the 2nd most important position on the field.

You may very well be correct on how Gett handles this, but he could surprise us all.

This is why I would not keep Hardy on the $13M tag. Let him go and sign your starting LT and get a very good WR with the same money.

Certainly possible that he could make a big move, but I think the chances are low. There's still much work to be done. As much of a need as LT is, there are several others too. Like the fact that we have only one receiver under contract, and even he doesn't appear totally safe at the moment.

Hopefully he is really into our selling points

- Young Mobile QB that will make you look better than you are

- Stingy Defense

- Long-Term Security

- Pro Bowl Center that'll make the correct calls

- Toldozer to pick up the blitz

- Warm Weather

- Being on a winner

Overall we are a pretty attractive destination for any of the LT on the free agent market

WANT.  No clue how we can afford it though.  If we have any shot, G-man better get a long-term deal with Hardy knocked out in the next couple of days before FA starts because Monroe is going to have plenty of options and he's not going to sit around hoping G-man gets his ducks in a row, even if he really wants to come to Carolina.  He could cost himself millions by doing so because the big money in FA generally flies fast and furious as soon as FA opens.

In another post, I said we could get to over 17 million in cap space with just 2 moves.

1) Sign Hardy to a long-term deal (very likely since both sides really want to get it done...and the Panthers have a sense of  urgency to get it done quick).  If it follows most big contracts (and I'm sure it will), he will only carry a 6-7 million cap figure for 2014.

2) Release Godfrey as a June 1st cut.  That frees up another 5 million.

That would bring our available space to at least 17 million...plenty to bring in someone like Monroe along with re-sign our own FA's and bring in a few others to fill out the roster.  And that doesn't even touch on the other moves Gettleman can make if he needs more room.

This is what surprises me.  I honestly thought this would've already happened.  He has a big cap figure and he's just not that good and now he's coming off of a ruptured Achille's.  I really don't think it was a coincidence that our defense seemed to get a lot better when he went out.

I think he either takes a big paycut or he gets cut.  Either way, we should get considerable cap savings out of him.  My guess as to why they haven't done anything with him yet is that they don't want cut off their nose to spite their face.  Lets say talks break down with Mitchell, and Mikell wants more than he's worth, Godfrey at least gives the team a veteran to plug in at Safety, even if he's nothing special.

Plus, he's relatively low on the priority list.  They can make a move anytime they need the space, so no need to worry about it now.

How about restructuring some of Charles Johnson's contract, could easily create another $6-8mil there surely?.

Don't June 1 cuts save cap room in June?  If so, don't add $5m to the cap for free agency purposes (as Linville suggests).  Maybe you can use that to sign your draft picks, but we can't chase a free agent with the $$.

Having him cut his salary and play is the best option for him and us.  He would give us depth at S, as you mention, and allow us to focus on another area.

Agree with everything you said...which is why I think Hardy at 13m is a luxury that we should not buy. We would be better off adding KT and either WR or CB in FA and rolling with CJ and Addison/Alexander at DE.

I can see both sides of the argument about keeping/not keeping Hardy, both have valid points. But as I said in another thread, I think the salary cap increase changed everything. Personally I would rather keep him, add pieces through the draft, and make another run with this defense.
