I don't think Smith is worth that either.

I think he has a valid argument that he's worth that to his team. I don't think he is, but when you have Cutler making big money and hardly ever getting to the playoffs, he's got a pretty good argument that he's worth that to the Chiefs because he's played well his last two full seasons and lead his teams to the playoffs.

Kaep has 5983 total yards and 40 total TDs since coming into the league.    He has 23 reg season starts under his belt and he took over a team that Alex Smith had in the NFCCG as well.

If this isn't a case of "NEED TO SEE MORE" then I don't know what is.

Cam for example,  since coming into the league has 92 total TDs,  over 13k total yards.   Despite the fact that the Panthers have yet to really build around him on the offensive side of the ball.   No all-star Oline,  run game or WRs.

He really believes his hype.  Put Kaepernick in Jacksonville, where there is no defense, a weak OL, and no real running game, and he is a bust.  He got lucky by getting drafted by a team with a good line, good D, and a good running attack.  His WRs and TEs are pretty good too.   Kiss those biceps, Squidward.  Its all you, buddy.

Yeah and put Jay Cutler on a team that went to the AFC Championship the year before, had a winning record, and is currently in the playoffs, and surely he will win the Superbowl with that team. Oh wait, that already happened and Cutler proceeded to take the Broncos out of the playoffs twice and before being traded and then leading the team that Rex Grossman took to the Superbowl to one playoff victory.

Yet, Cutler, fresh off of being out played by his backup and failing to get his team to the playoffs despite the Vikings tanking, Lions imploding, and the Packers running through starting QBs like underwear...

Gets 18 Million a year.

And according to some, he is being underpaid.

If he gets 18 million per year, Cam deserves 20+. Kaep couldn't get anything with a great o-line, good running game, and Vernon Davis & Bolden until Crabtree returned. Give Cam the same team, he wins a ring.

I've been saying it since Cam's rookie season. Put Cam on the 49ers in 2011 through the present and there's no doubt in my mind that he would have 3 rings

I really don't get the point.  Are you being sarcastic?  If so, are you suggesting that one twisted and convoluted example disprovies the fact that a one-read, pistol QB would not succeed witholut the proper pieces around him?  Are you saying that just because another team pays a qb more than he is worth because they find themselves in a difficult situation (Chicago, Baltimore, etc) that means that Keapernick has earned a huge pay day? Is that what you are saying?  I really do not know.

The point is Colin (and Cam) will ask for a contract similar to Cutler. This whole QB pay debate is not so much about Colin as it is about Cutler.

The reason why I brought up Cutler and the Broncos is because you seem to indicate that any QB can take a team like the 49ers to where Colin has taken the 49ers. Well, Cutler was in the exact same situation as Colin when he was with the Broncos. The team had just went to the AFC Championship, had a mediocre QB, and was in the thick of a playoff race.

When Cutler took over his team missed the playoffs; Colin took his team within 5 yards of a SB victory.

The same Cutler that just missed the playoffs and signed an 18 million dollar contract.

All Colin (and Cam) will ask for is the same type of contract.

Matthew Stafford is making 17 million a year.

Kaepernick is going to get that or more, it's just the market right now.

I have little doubt he'll get it. I just don't believe he deserves it. Neither does Stafford.

But I'm always at least a little happy when opponents pay players more money than they're really worth, so...

The recent Cutler deal pretty much sealed it.

Some people are definitely going to be upset about Cam's contract, but that's the way it is.

I see.

You can suggest that paying a QB $18 million is just the way it is, but I don't know any team who has paid an average or limited QB big money and done well afterwards. The reason?  They need good players around them, but their huge salaries prevent that from happening.  How well has Detroit done since Stafford signed his megadeal?  SF, Balt--two teams with QBs on rookie deals did well, but could that be because the cap was used to support them?  How did Flacco do in 2014 with $15 million less to spend on support?  Can Kaepernick take the team on his back week after week?  If that happens, the Niners are losing. Cam did it here.  Kaepernick was inserted into a system already designed to accommodate a similar skill set and he had a coach who understands the QB position.  But most of all, the Niners had a great OL, a stout running game, and a very good defense.  Remember when Jake Delhomme looked like a super star behind a strong OL, a stout running game, and a very good defense?  We gave him a healthy deal.  We lost the supporting cast and he became Jake Delhomme again.

Other teams may be doing it, but there are only a handful of QBs I would pay $18 million, and Keapernick is not close to being one of them.
