Yes I did take it as an insult to Smith and I believe that Smith was bothered by it as well. You don't tell the media that you're evaluating Smith while speaking of him in the past tense. You are right about one thing though, words do have meaning. 

Asked if there's any chance the Panthers would part ways with Smith -- set to make $4 million guaranteed along with a $3 million bonus -- Gettleman said: "Steve's had a great career, and (super-long pause) the bottom line is, it's part of the evaluation process."

 

We are getting too technical but that isn't past tense. It's present perfect. I am an English teacher you know. Laugh

 

Is it ruthless? Yes Is it an insult? No Gettleman is evaluating whether or not it is worth it to pay him that 7 million bonus. Being ruthless in this business is not a bad thing. That doesn't mean he will be gone. Steve's reaction to the comments is "Do you realize who I am?" Do you realize what I've done for this organization?" when the appropriate thing to say is business is business. No player in this league is above this.

In the content he spoke, it was said in the past tense. He followed that by saying, something to the effect of no one plays forever. To me, what he said was in the past tense, in a manner of speaking, negative, disrespectful and unnecessary. Smith contriubution to the team, should have earned him the right, not to be treated this way. Gettleman, didn't treat Gross that way. Therefore one can only guess as to what his intent is. I hope that Smith continues to play for the Panthers and retire a Panther.

Maybe it's because he knew GROSS WAS GOING TO RETIRE, and wasn't seeking another big pay day as a still relevant but nonetheless physically challenged, aging receiver like Smith. 

 

I don't think Gettleman spoke in the most careful words. I would agree. But I don't think he was outright rude or dismissive either. He just seemed like he didn't want to answer the question, or give up to much to the reporter, and move on. Or maybe not (if he wanted to send Smith a message about 2014 salary)!?

 

Smith on the other hand, was seemingly looking for a tussle, since his comments were certainly ego driven and inflammatory with out a professional, restrained, wait and see or clichéd response. It takes Two To Tango. And it's not so clear (as many here think) who was the most culpable. 

 

I think Gettleman wants a restructure or pay cut from Smith, like everyone else. He knows his price. 

 

I to wish he was more self effacing. However, that's not the Giants, and apparently The Gettleman way.

Gross was mulling retirement and he probably knew he was going to retire based on Gross restructuring last offseason. I think the reporter pressed him about whether or not SS was going to be playing for Carolina next year. I understand where your coming from but this is about money. Is SS worth 7 million right now? Maybe Maybe not I guess we'll agree to disagree

He's trying to get the team out of salary cap hell while still being conpetitve. He knows that players agents are watching and listening to everything he says. He will have to be a hard ass to certain players in negotiations. Therefore he cannot portray a soft , loving public persona and then come in and ask a guy to take a pay cut or restructure his contract.

Gettleman has a very difficult job. With our financial status being what it is we probably shouldn't even be competitive right now. He's trying to straighten that out and build a championship team. So far so good but you don't get there by being best friends with everyone include the media.

you mean most can't handle realizing the breakup is coming... nevertheless he's likely going to retire next year anyway. ask yourself, has he done enough this year to bring the difference to our WR success as he did 5 years ago? dude, it's about that time. Smitty is my boy, but he's a strong #3 now or and solid #2 when healthy (haha)... we need a #1 and Ginn should be the minimum of our WRs. Don't get me wrong, SS can certainly play longer, but best believe it will not be like what made us like him years ago in a consistent role. The end is coming and he will "decide" to leave rather than be forced out. No way JR lets that happen while he's alive. peace

You can say the sun is purple all you want and it doesn't make it true.

 

So, in the content he spoke....and in proper English....it was present tense...it's not debatable.
