Lol I can't believe we're having this discussion. If anybody still has doubts about Gettleman, there's only one response you need:

He's been apart of and helped put together 6 Super Bowl Rosters and got 3 Super Bowls to show for it, he must be doing something right.

I didn't mean talk to Smitty before his comments but after/down the line. Gentleman has been busy with the draft and getting other players to restructure. I'm sure he would have spoken to Smitty down the road and talked to him about his future. He just answered the question in his style of rhetoric, like "evaluating" "part of the puzzle" "it's a process"

And what happened with the Cam thing? Nothing because it was a non story. Most of that "fiasco" was outside the locker room and not in it.

Of course Smitty is different to Cam and anything that even sounds like a slight to him, will make him react(exactly how he did) because of that still huge chip on his shoulder and fiery personality.

And if a grown man, legend or not can't handle comments about him being "evaluated" thats a bigger problem, imo.

As long as Gentleman is straight with players in the locker room and have a good rapport with them, I'm fine and I'm sure the team will be too.

 

I would hardly call the Cam thing a "non story", since just about every time our team struggled that came up, especially early in the season.

 

It's not about being or not being able to "handle" comments, but creating a basic dialogue. My hope is that one has occurred by now, as it should have anyway to begin with. It's just disappointing that we are heading into Gettleman's second season as our GM, and for the second time we are dealing with the fallout stemming from his own comments about one of the key players in our franchise at a press conference.

Are you referring to tiger7_88? He literally became a fan of the team because we drafted Cam Newton. He's an Auburn Tigers fan. Ask him yourself.

Don't think that other players aren't looking at how Steve Smith is treated.  His "feelings" may cause repercussions throughout the organization and the league as a whole.  No need to piss him off unnecessarily, or any player for that matter.

 

Maybe, Maybe Not.  This might just fire Smitty up and sharpen that Chip on his shoulder. 

 

Maybe Gettleman's way of getting one or two more seasons out of one of the best weapons in the NFL.

i agree and that is why i don't think what G-man intentional bbut just off hand. There is no ring of truth given G-man's personality that this was some message he was sending Smith. In the end I think this will come out and all will be fine with G-man and Smith.

I don't buy that. Gettleman, seems to me, to be a straight forward type of guy. I believe that he meant what he said. Why he meant it, why he chose to share it with the media and why he feels that way about Steve Smith, I don't know. You don't disrespect someone in that manner and not know it. He couldn't say what he said and know have some idea of how Smith would feel about it and how the media would use it.

When the team signed Tolbert i was almost angry, Tolbert was for me a useless intruder.

Today the bowling ball is my favorite player right after Smitty.

12-4 first season

3/5 good draft picks, the other two maybe good also, they had pretty good colegiate records.

Picked up valuable free agents with peanuts for money like mitchell, ginn, wharton, florence, mikkel, hixon, all had big telling input into our season.

Got the cap from $16 mil over to nearly the same amount under.

Any gm in the league having to come in to replace basically your star LT gross, #1 receiver smitty, and make up for one of the worst o-lines, offense and secondary in the league would have his work cut out!

Add to that players with huge unwarranted contracts that were handed out by sentiment alone which basically handcuff you for a number of years would make any GMs job pretty much hamstrung, the guy can only do so much because of what has gone in before he even got here, I tell you one thing though the guy knows talent whether it's picking up a vet who everyone thinks is finished who can stil contribute or a rookie off of some teams dumpster he knows talent and that will stand us in good stead for the future, once the cap situation is sorted we will also be able to do more regards free agency.

I'm satisfied with 12 months work by DG, here's hoping for another 12 months of the same.

But Steve Smith is still producing, and is in the top half of the league as far as receiving. I think that it is presumptuous to assume that Smith's production has decreased because he is breaking down. The OC's conservative play calling, as well as the FO's reluctance for the past few years to get a legit threat opposite 89 adds to the misconception that Smith can no longer produce at a high level. Sure, he isn't what he once was, but he isn't dead by any means.

Yes I did take it as an insult to Smith and I believe that Smith was bothered by it as well. You don't tell the media that you're evaluating Smith while speaking of him in the past tense. You are right about one thing though, words do have meaning.

It bothers me not because of WHAT was said, but that it was said in the public before it was ever said in private to Smitty. 89 is going to have a statue outside of this stadium one day. You don't treat those guys like that, new Sheriff in town or not. Especially when a year ago you did the exact opposite with Jordan Gross who also was coming off a very mediocre year....

No one is saying that Gettleman is intentionally trying to do harm to himself or the organization, but he is still a relatively green GM, and his handling of this Steve Smith situation is indicative of his inexperience.

 

Gettleman answered the Smith question exactly like he should have.  EVERY player is being evaluated....should they be upgraded, are they playing at a level comensurate with their salary/cap, etc

 

Gett is showing that everyone has to produce at a level that warrants their pay (no exceptions)....and this is the right thing to do.
