Franchise tag it is

We can always lift it or trade him or sign a longterm deal. This doesn't confirm anything. All it does is keep all options intact.

This. He's not gonna get more $ than the tag will provide and the FO gets to show him what kinda room it gives us if a long-term contract is negotiated and what that means to a Super Bowl run.

Kraken gets his money.

We still need to bring in 2 tackles, 2 safeties, 2 CBs, and 2 WRs.

2 tackles -one in FA, one in the draft

2 safeties- Mitchell and one from the roster after cutting Godfrey

2 corners- draft and one from roster

2 WR - re-sign Ginn, restructure Smitty, McNutt, King and BPA with first pick

Kraken, Luke, Cam - there isn't a better or younger 3-man Pro Bowl group in the NFL to build a dynasty around.

It confirms he won't be walking in free agency which seemed like a very real possibility with our cap situation. So yes, this is big news. I don't see why the tag would be lifted.

It absolutely DOESN'T confirm that. If we didn't tag him by Monday, then the tag or tag and trade would be completely out of the possibility. It's very possible Gettleman hasn't made his mind up about Hardy and may not want to keep him once he does decide. Even after tagging him we still have that option to lift it and let him walk, if that's what Gettleman decides. All this does is keep the options of keeping him on the tag or trading him intact, which wouldn't be options had we not tagged him before Monday. We still have the option to let him walk. Nothing is 100%.
