I certainly hope so, but everyone knew he sucked prior to last season and yet lo and behold there we went into the season with him entrenched at RT with virtually no competition for the spot.

 

last season we had all-pros at LT and C, a burgeoning star at LG, and solid guys at RG. given our enormous cap issues it wasn't a big deal to have a weakness on the line.

 

this season both guard positions are up in the air (hopefully silatolu will pick back up where he left off) and gross is gone, leaving ryan kalil the only real foundational block in the trenches. last year's personnel decisions simply cannot be compared to this year's.

Like I said in the last thread its no way Bell is not a panther next season, the coaches and management seem to be believe in him and he is serviceable. I would rather see them groom Nate Chandler as Bell's replacement but i call no shots

You'll have to remind me again who those guys were.  Everyone knew the right side of the OL was a complete poo show going into the season.  They were bad, but if anything, they honestly outperformed expectations.

Rivera is right.. bell could play left tackle (at best spot starter) but bell will never replace gross :/ ...... But right now I wouldnt believe a word front office is saying (smoke signals for draft and free agency) but everybody knows panthers will be major players for all oline/ wrs/ CBs ...

So, what many of you are saying is that Rivera should have said that we have nobody on the team that can play LT, so if you are a starting caliber tackle, we will have to pay you 30% more than you could get from anyone else because we have no other choice?  Ok, got it.

 

Seriously, what else can he say.  No matter what he thinks in private, he has to publicly keep his options open.  First of all, he doesn't want to give the leverage to a FA, he also doesn't want let other teams in the draft know that we have to take an OT early.  Also, he wants to use it as a carrot to motivate guys currently on the roster.  The truth is, he didn't commit to anything, and left open the possibility that they can look anyplace for our new LT...really nothing earth shattering.

FWIW, Gross said the exact same thing about Bell this morning on the Mac Attack. spoke pretty highly of him playing LT
