Panthers Sign K Graham Gano to Four-Year Deal

We never really had a problem with stability at kicker with Kasay here for so long and I think most took that for granted. Locking Gano up was important, he has been money since he's been here. Not usually a fan of that kind of money to kickers but we had to get him signed. Better than Mare for god sakes..

I would have just tag him .. 12 mill 4 years ehhh that over the Franchice tag 2.7 and for 4 years ... Not terrible but I think 2.5 per would been fair not 3.1 per ... But I'm just a blogger .. Would love to get paid for this ish thu ...

And what you fail to realize or mention is that it was widely known that the Redskins field was in horrible conditions and one of the toughest fields to kick on. http://www.derp/2013/10/29/5041852/graham-gano-panthers-kicker

You know... I never honestly thought of that. I always cringe looking at that field. There and Pitt are atrocious. That does make me feel better that his struggles could have been the anomaly. Good catch.

Hate it. Hate it. Hate it.

Kickers aren't consistent from year to year. That's just math, and you can view the evidence in the chart in this link. Since kickers aren't consistent from year to year, it's almost impossible for a kicker to live up to a long-term contract that pays above the league average.

The math in that article contradicts itself somewhat. It points out the variance inherent in a kickers stats yet criticizes teams for signing kickers who have good years. What stat is more correlated with good kickers than ...kicking well?

You and the article seem to be suggesting that you should sign journeymen kickers every year for low salaries.

This has been tested and doesn't work.

The article criticizes the logic of paying a kicker a high salary for multiple years based on the kicker having one good year. Kickers don't sustain that level of production. They regress to the mean. The Panthers just locked up a kicker for four years based on a season where his field goal accuracy (88.9%) was over 10% higher than his lifetime average of 78%. If I had to bet, I would bet that we get lifetime Greg (78%) more often than we get 2013 Greg (88.9%).

Graham Gano was a journeyman kicker signed for a low salary! That worked out great! Before last year he was hitting on a little under 75% of his field goals. He had a very good year here, but the evidence suggests that he won't live up to his contract.

It's a great point but remember one thing, we have to use the franchise tag for Greg Hardy.
